Is Crossflow cp-40 overkill for a 40 breeder?

I have a 40 breeder sps tank.
Currently I have 2 rw8's on either side of the tank facing each other. There is also an mp10 blowing across the back of the tank. The flow is good but it's getting hard to place them due to coral growth.
I'm thinking of getting one crossflow to subsitute for one of the rw8's. Is the cp-40 overkill, should I get a cp-25 instead?.

thanks,
Albert

Nope it's not get the CP-40 you can run it at just under half no problem. I have a 41" shallow tank and run a single CP-40 at 70% opposite the return and really like it. I think you'll end up replacing both the RW8's with the CP-40.

I disagree with the above post. I would get the 25 model. I have a cp40 on one end of my tank, and it moves a lot of water. Mine is a 190 gallon (5' long). I run it in the range of 50-75% power. The CP40 has enough power to blow water right out of your tank.

Hmm I don't find that at all. It flows about 3' after that it's wave is greatly reduced, and I run it at min 70% (ther is no 5% increments) Be far easier on a pump to run at say 30% rather than the 25 at 90-100 because it was't enough flow.

Your right, there is no 5% increment. I just looked. Im actually running 30% back and forth, but I have 1 at each end.

Here are 2 videos of a 40G tank with CP40.
High setting. Fast forward to about 30 seconds in

Low setting

I still suggest getting the appropriate size one for you tank. Especially since you are running other pumps. Good luck with your choice.

I would get the cp-25. I couldn’t imagine a cp-40 on my 40 breeder, although I do have one on my 150. I have a cp-25 on my 40 breeder & still have to keep it at about half power. I do have 2 pp8’s on the 40 breeder with the cp-25.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll probably get the cp-25 however the high flow on the video would be great to periodically stir the heck out of the tank. I have a bb and turkey baste every few days, with that high flow, it would probably be the end of my turkey basting days.

Well, I ended up getting the cp-40. I took out the 2 rw8's and have the cp-40 on one side of the tank and the mp10 on the other. I have them hooked up to a reefkeeper. Each one goes on for one minute. The cp40 is running at 70% and imo it is not overkill for this tank. I like the flow but it's only the first day so we'll see.

Thought it would work perfect, and it'll be way easier on it not running a CP-25 at full blast.
