start off with something like a 2065 or so. i have one and it is very very big, makes the 1.75 dumas look tiny.

Also since I think Zap brought it up. Some of the new mod owners where complaining about the mods pull air from more than 6" deep.
Since Photobucket started letting me host videos I thought I would post a pic of my prop mod the a gutter guard shroud. The openess of the shroud keeps the vortex from forming and you can run a MJ1200 with in 2" of the surface with out a vortex. Also moves more water than the MJmod style slitted PVC shroud. Sorry if this has been covered it is hard to keep up with this thread. |

Yeah, the best way to prevent the vortex is to make sure the suction is well spread out and not too strong.

man that i quite a lots of mods. i thought i had a bunch of them, 8 1200's, 4 in the display and 4 in the 90g tank. but one ? , why is everyone building such laong shrouds, i try to build mine as shourt as possible, the mod is already long as it is so i try to keep it short.
now those ball sockets look good, i also see that you built some magnet mounts, now just build a magnet mount with a recesed ball socket into it and we would be styling. Tim |

That was the sch 80 PVC couplings that the guy that cut the schroud found to use. I always made mine of the the sch 40 Grey electrical coupling which is about an inch shorter.
We had a bit of an assembly line going we had those and two more built in 4hrs. with walk thru for the newbies. I just gald everyones worked right. |

Yeah I don't get that either. I deliberately built mine short as well to get the widest stream possible. D. |

For the guy doing the Mag7 or whatever. Itss very easy to do, as you can simply secure the shroud to the mag with the screws, make the cross brace (the magnet requires support at both ends) out of acrylic rod, etc. The prop you will want to use is an Octura 1455, but with a slightly larger mag you could use a 1470.

We ordered the caps and prop from MJmod. One of the guys made up all the shrouds ahead of time. So it was mostily assembly, fine tuning and fiquring out mounts that would work for everyone.

I found an easy way to make accurate measurements to line up the holes for drilling. Spread a few strips of masking tape side by side on flat surface. Mark the pattern to be drilled while it is flat then put the tape on the shroud-to-be. It is much more accurate and and quicker than trying to make the marks directly on the round PVC tubing. I usually use a 1/4"x1/4" two by three grid just like Ghnguyen's.

Nothing wrong with the drilled holes for inlet
Infact if you take care to drill them straight and even, they can look just as good as the slotted ones. D. |

My first try at a maxi-mod worked pretty good - thanks guys
Well I just finished and wet tested a MJ1200 mod using a dumas 3004. Big thanks to dhnguyen for the mechanics and quangtam7 for the design ideas. This thing works surprisingly well. I was really careful to keep the tolerances tight to keep vibration down and went to the carbon tube impeller drive for the same reason. I used a short tube (1.5 in grey PVC coupler) for a wide flow and I think I got just that.
The only thing I have to really add to the discussion is some good material for the centering cap. I found that HD has blank outlet covers for their grey pvc electrical boxes in the electrical department. It is the same PVC used in the pipe and boxes so it made for some nice flat PVC material to dremel to shape and bonded nicely to the end of the pipe using PVC cement. Same color and ready to go. I went with the tri-shaped cover look just for asthetics. Here ya go: -Rob |

The shrouds that MjMods sells are very long.
i cut the large mjmod shroud rite at the end of the last slot and ran the prop out close to the end and it works and looks great, did the same thing with the old style small one too and its perfect. |
