Sump

Looking for advice I have a 150 display and a 40 breeder as a sump (DIY).I want to do the sump over and make a large refugium section. I built the first section with (3) 4” filter socks can I remove that and have no mechanical filtration and just have a skimmer with the refugium?

IMHO mechanical filtration causes more problems than it fixes. It's usually the first thing I remove.
