Hydrogen sulfide or cyano?
Help with ID please - Hydrogen sulfide or cyano?
I've been having mysterious LPS tissue recession / polyp bailout after they've been doing well for about a year. All parameters stable (8.3KH, 420Ca, 1400Mg, 15NO3, 0.03PO4, pH 7.9-8.1, temp 76, TDS RODI 0 out) All softies, clams, fish, shrimps are not showing any signs of stress. No major changes in routine. After ruling out several different possible causes, starting to wonder if sulfide is the issue. Any help would be appreciated. |

The purple stains under the sand are probably cyano, and it's normal. Bubbles in the sand are usually nitrogen, possibly with a bit of H2S. That's also normal. It is somewhat unlikely that the stress you are seeing is due to toxins in the sand.

I don't see anything unusual in the pictures, either. Cyanobacteria certainly is a possibility for the purple, but a lot of things could be growing. If there were much of a problem with hydrogen sulfide, I'd expect the tank to have an odor.

Thank you -
No noticeable odor at all. Glad I can rule out sulfide. |
