Vermatid Snail Poop??
Long time lurker first time poster! Go easy.
Long story short I inherited a 29G BC with a BB from a family member that was mainly LPS with no fish and a small CUC. I noticed quite a bit of waste along the bottom (see pictures) that I couldn't figure out the source. Everyday I diligently siphoned it out with a turkey baster. What you see in the picture is what is accumulated in one day in the one dead spot of the tank. Fast forward 3 months and i now have a new onyx clown and the waste problem on the bottom of the tank is becoming concerning. I have noticed an alarming amount of Vermatid Snails. I eliminated one large one, but have hundreds of little ones growing on the rock. Is this junk on the bottom Vermatid Snail poop? I have had two tanks in the past and never seen anything like this in such large quantity. I have never had vermatids before either. |

Welcome to a tank..
Thats just "detritus" in general and is absolutely normal and not just from a vermetid snail.. Its a collection of all creatures (fish/pods/snails/craps/worms/,etc..) poop/sand/rock particulate/body cells,etc.. from all animals and formations in the tank. Its settling there specifically because thats a low flow area.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detritus

That is what I was assuming it was for a while , but I noticed its always the same shape, color, size. I've had a couple tanks in the past and never seen detritus build up this quickly with much heavier bioloads.
I have 1 clown and a small CUC with a few corals, I don't see how they can produce that much waste in a matter of 12hrs. One of my previous tanks was just clowns and a CUC and some softies and i never saw detritus that looked like that. |

Well.. it is what it is..
Your previous tank may have had better flow and as such it was not as noticeable or pronounced.. You should see the pile of "waste" a single baby can make in a day..

haha my wife and I have so far skated by without knowing how much they can poop a day.
I guess I can change up the flow see if that helps out, its my first BB so I'm not used to seeing detritus so obviously. I appreciate the help! Happy Reefing! |

and yes.. bare bottom makes it even more pronounced..
I never understood those that think BB is "better" in anyway.. Everything about it is a negative to me.. But thats life.. We all are different.. And yes.. Enjoy/Happy Reefing
