Busted!!! For Illegal Live Rock Collection/Sales

Dale Barger of Florida Live Rock got off easy IMO.
Future prosecutions are rumored to get harsher and harsher.
https://www.fws.gov/le/pdf/01-17-201...sentencing.doc

Do your part folks... buy AQUACULTURED live rock from places like TampaBaySaltwater. You get all the same benefits but it's not harming the reef.

I've seen these operations first hand. They're legit.

Dry rock about to go in...

And here it is a few months later...

To short, this is why people do it! Until they have harsher punishments this will continue.

Dang.
No wonder Dale had a reputation in the hobby as having good rocks.

I can't say anything that hasn't been said already: The penalty should have been stiffer. And this is why we can't have nice things. I'm worried about misguided policy making constraining our hobby. Crooked behaviors will mar the hobby.

Side note: Did Dale run Gulf View (not to be confused with Gulf Live Rock)? Just wondering because that business disappeared a year or so ago.

Wow.. just wow.. hobbies should not destroy the natural environment which we are trying to bring into our homes for enjoyment. I agree, the penalties should have been far greater.

Wait till it dawns on the people that have purchased from him/others that they are in violation of the Lacey act too.. "possession"..

I suspect that they have records of his sale transactions and as such "They know who you are"... mmuuuhhhaaaaaa... Gulfview customers...beware...

Probably cost taxpayers a lot more than $35k to investigate, prosecute, sentence, and enforce.

Agree the fine should be much stiffer. The fine probably doesn’t even cover the market value of what was stolen? And this is the sort of thing that will be cited next time special interest groups want to ban live collection of any kind, like in Hawaii.

after following a link from that page to here https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndal/pr...whitetail-deer and the guy paying 750000 for transporting whitetails, 100,000 going to the Lacey fund, I wonder. Did he get off easy after agreeing to roll on all his old customers?

If the roxk taken was sold for $5 a pound it was total $75,000 thats a cheaper price more a lower quality fiji LR price. If it sold for more of a premium LR price at $8 a pound it would be $120,000. So a $35,000 fine does not even cover the cost of the stolen LR. Got off super easier.
