300 gallon aquarium bottom broke; need to fix

Hey all,

I'm back and forth between fixing this tank, or buying a different one. I bought this on craigslist and the bottom cracked while I was moving it.

I'm thinking of buying bottom glass (which glass in particular is the main question). Current bottom glass is 96"x25" 1/2 inch thick.

People are shoving me all over the place (not aquarium safe, we don't recommend this glass blah blah blah) in order to get glass for the thing.

Then after I find glass, I planned on stripping ALL silicon from tank and just re siliconing all of it.

My other option is finish building the stand I started for this tank, put glass down over the cracked glass, and silicon the crap out of it.

Can anyone that has been down this road please provide some advice here?

All you need to know is there..
I personally would repair the tank.. (again.."personally" because I know I have the skills,etc... to do so properly)
I also believe that "If you have to ask then you aren't ready" so I can't say if you should or not..

Trying to order glass; I call glass companies and say I want 96x25" glass annealed, smooth edges.

I get everything from our glass isn't aquarium safe to some people saying "window glass won't work for what you need".

I'm no glass expert so not sure what kind of glass to buy.

I did find someone that would help me cut out all silicon/clean/reseal with new bottom glass for reasonable price that does this as a side job, but I need to find the glass

If you are hell bent on replacing the bottom panel, I know GlassCages will sell you a panel that big. 16 square feet at either $9/ft for 1/2" or $21 for 3/4". Probably not cheap to ship though.

What you are asking for is fine.. They just don't know how to build aquariums either.. but the glass is nothing special.. Just the right size/thickness and good to go..

Agreed! Besides it's none of their business what you do with the glass. They either make the sale or they don't. You can take your money elsewhere if the don't want to sell it to you.

I did the lay the glass on the bottom thing for a 55 and it worked great. I used a piece that was 1/8" short all around. No need to use too much silicone.
