Cutting back hairy mushroom

I swear it grew two inches this month...

Can I just go at it with a pair of scissors? Its taking over half my tank.

I'm sure it will. When extended it can completely cover that Acan and touch the fire and ice zoas. It's the size of a dinner plate.

I do like it, just takes up a quarter of the tank. I've seen it eat a large Silverside that my rose dropped. I once took a razorblade and made multiple cuts across it but instead of splitting into many it healed.

If hitting it with scissors has the same risk of cutting it off the rock ill try that and dragging. No idea how to go at it.

I say you cut off a piece and mount it somewhere else and see how it does. JMO

No matter what if you cut it in your tank, make shure you are running plenty of carbon. any time you cut a softie ir releases toxins.

Thanks Eric. To bad its on the base rock id love to pull it out like that guy did. I'm going to cut four big chunks off and rinse them in tank water (in a bucket) and move them to the sump. I'll run carbon in that section. After that ill go ahead with my waterchange.

If the pieces I cut off heal ill have more free frags, if not hopefully the orig mushroom makes it. I didn't notice the slime that that poster talks about when I sliced mine but nice to know.

On a side note I dump my spare clippings in the sump, and its growing some pink birdsnest and some other acro. Not fast but growing. Didn't think that little led light had it in it.

cut the entire mushroom off the rock, it should heal up just like any other shroom, then u can sell it and the foot thats left on the rock will regenerate into a new one

Took a pair of kitchen scissors and cut a large strip off. Seconds after the first cut the mushroom shriveled up to the point more cuts would have been to hard to do.

I saw no leaking white that someone posted about in another thread. In about a hour the cuts were growing "hairy" parts on the edge.

The large piece I cut off just denigrated. Guess you do have to get some of the foot in order for the cutting to grow.

I know that this is a really old thread, but I am having the exact same problem. Did you suffer any repercussions from cutting the shroom in your tank? I don't really care if the cuttings live or not, but should I even attempt to culture them in my display? Did the disintegration have negative consequences?

Sounds to me like he should have cut it like an anemone right across the mouth. A far as risks just make sure your running fresh activated carbon as stated by others and a strong skimmer.
