Collecting and prepping natural sea water

Hello everyone

I've used NSW in the past. I just want to make sure nothing has changed. I get it 20 or so miles offshore and let it sit with no aeration or circulation for about 30 days. Then avoid using the bottom part of the water. Is that about right or shou;d I be doing something else?

Thanks for any input

That should be fine as long as the water doesn't have any decay odor after sitting.

I am assuming that given your location that your NSW is coming from the Gulf Stream. You should be able to use the water immediately after collection if you put it through a 0.5 to 1.0 um drinking water filter. Also feel free to use every last drop. I did this for many years with GS water collected off of the Florida Keys ca. 10-15 miles offshore. Never had a single problem. Others who don’t have access to water with the purity you do need to let it age. I still recommend sub-micron filtering. Ron

I live near the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and they have a saltwater collection site available to the public to use for their aquariums. They skim the water, UV it, and run it through sediment filters, but then the water if safe to use. UV might not be a bad idea to implement too.
