how soon to raise alk after stopping carbon dosing
I am just coming off of dosing a carbon source (honey). I just stopped it as it was causing more issues then good. But am wondering how long any of you have waited to brink alk up after discontinuing dosing a carbon source.
The honey helped me rid the tank of cyano and hair algae that i had been battling for a long time. But in the end an alk spike caused sps to burn and now i am having trouble keeping the alk low enough to not burn corals even without dosing it (alk) for the last month. Any help is appreciated on a protocol on when i can stop worrying about my alk creeping up towards 7.

Hmm, I'd probably give the tank a week or so, but that's just a guess. Is the tank getting fed daily?

Yes, still feeding. But alk is naturally on its way up and I don't want to continue with dosing acid every few days to keep it down.

I don't understand why the alkalinity is rising. Are water changes the issue?
At this point, I probably would let the alkalinity rise and watch the tank carefully for a while.

i am not sure either unless the addition of the muriatic acid is only good for short term and naturally will raise after. Only other thing i could attribute it to is the mystery of honey which is why i cut it out.

The alkalinity drop from muriatic acid is permanent. Adding vinegar would have a temporary effect. I'm not sure what's happening, but tap water and pH buffers are the more common stealth sources of alkalinity.

That is the strange thing, I use rodi water and stopped water changes a week or so ago as i figured that was raising it a bit, but it still creeps up a little bit daily. Haven't added honey in a couple days now so i guess i will let it creep up as i am sure it will stop soon and i can safely go above 7 without carbon being dosed into the system now.
