Onyx percs or photons

Just got a pair I really like and was wondering if anyone can confirm whether they’re onyx perculas or photon hybrids. Thanks very much

My guess would be Photons based on the white outline the female has around her soft rayed fins.
Though what can be seen of the eyes could also point to a captive-bred percula. So it could also be an Onyx percula strain.

These are Black Photons:

So Photons may actually have solid orange eyes.

As what did you buy them and how knowledgeable is the seller?

I have bought photons on accident.
Also lfs get confused with the difference

I have both photons and onyx percs
There are differences
Look also at the high dorsal on the photons
Percs have a lower dorsal
Also photons and onyx percs can share that orange eye so it’s not the only criteria

Yes, as the pictures above demonstrate, orange eyes are not a reliable tell that these are not photons. Though a true percula never has black eyes.
The same goes for the white fin outline - its absence is not a definitive tell, its presence on the other hand is.

Such a large amount of black could point to Photons or captive-bred Onyx percula. With wild percula, it is rather rare.

All reason why I wouldn't touch any captive-bred percula or ocellaris with 10ft pole unless I know the breeder and the parents are wild-caught.

More likely the super darker strain of Onyx. At least the female is probably that with a small misbar marking. If the male came from the same parents it’s likely Onyx too. There are onyx clowns with 100% Percula lineage that get dark in the face like that. While there’s a possibility of them being photons, I don’t believe that’s the case.

If you can post a slightly longer video, we’ll probably be able to ID them more accurately.

Yes, and flip the phone - vertical videos are not only annoying but also fairly useless on a computer.

Will do. I’ll post some more videos later on.
I got them from a guy that had bought an entire setup and sold what he didn’t want. He said they were onyx clowns from what the previous owner said but didnt know much more.

I have some other captive bred onyx as well that look similar but I’m not sure. I’ll share some videos today.

Those are tank raised Onyx clowns.
Some are just really dark without having any Ocellaris in them.
I had one that was extremely black even on the tail and pectoral fins, and some black markings on the chin.
