Possible cause of death

So I checked on my black and white osc this morning and he was perfectly fine and ate this morning. Come back from doing some errands this evening and he's shoved in a crevice so I thought he was dead. Got him out of the crevice and he was breathing extremely rapidly and the black in him looked kinda faded. Checked all the parameters and everything is on point. All other fish are fine and acting normal. He seemed like he could move his pectoral fins but his caudal fin wouldn't move. Could he have possibly broken his back? I don't know how likely that is
