Banded Trochus Snail Spawning

I finally was able to capture my trochus snails spawning on camera. Just for your information, this has happened before and they do actually live to become adult snails. I originally started with 5 snails and now have at least 40 in the tank all from their breeding. Just thought I would share. I had to edit out the sound because there was some profanity since someone else in the room didn't know I was taking a VIDEO.

I wish I had more memory available on the camera to take a longer movie as you could distinctly see the eggs come out later.

Music was the only way I could get rid of the other audio track.

That's pretty cool. How long is it between spawning periods? I can't seem to find any trochus in my area. Care to retail a few?

I'd be happy to sell some once they reach the 1/4"-1/2" size. I want to hang onto the larger ones that I have right now because they seem to be regular breeders. I can't make an accurate estimate has to how frequently they spawn because I only see the tank 2 days out of the week.

This has happened to be too. I have 1 snail that's been releasing sperm every few weeks. He must have been doing it for a while because I'm seeing several Trochus Snails about 1/4"-1/2" with adult colors. Tons of tiny baby white snails everywhere.

They are definately industrius little things. I have noticed that they seem to time their release near lights out. I just wish my clowns would spawn. I've had them for a year and a half and they are very friendly with each other but still no spawn.

I can confirm the timing thing. My snail always spawned just after lights out.

My trochus snails are spawning like crazy! All ten of them in the tank just releasing "smoke". This happened Sunday morning and again yesterday morning. Almost at same exact time.

I was exciting at first but now I'm a little worried because everytime they do this, my tank gets cloudy real quick. I did an emergency 20% water change Saturday and ran and extra canister of carbon to clear the water. I did not have time for another water change yesterday. I just ran the extra carbon and left or work.

My question is how long do these snails spawn for? The event last for an hour or so but multiple of them are doing it at the same time. I just hope that they don't keep doing this.

The sperm isn't going to crash you tank or foul your water. It's good for your corals and your skimmer will remove it pretty quickly.

Mine used to spawn in the early morning or after a big water change.

Marsfrogie, do you have a protein skimmer? Where did you originally get your trochus? Thanks!

Cool stuff. It's amazing how these guys can spawn and grow with all the skimming, filtration, and predation.

I have never seen my trochus snail's spawn, but I have been finding babies throughout my tank. The other night I came home my skimmer was stopped/not working. Come to find out, there was a baby trochus snail in the pump!

Is it pretty common for trochus snails to reproduce in the home aquarium?

I already have about 25-30 in my system from just buying them, I'm sure I'll see an explosion in population over the next year!!!

I think it may be mine have spawned several times that I know of because I went from 2 or 3 of them to about 6 of them over the last year or so.

Have a bunch of Nerite snails wandering around that are about 1/16" - 1/8". These were the eggs.

I'm witnessing this in my tank right now! I came downstairs this morning and found a cloudy tank and almost freaked out for a minute. I looked around and saw one of the snails releasing "smoke." Then, nearby that one I spotted another one release tiny eggs. Its pretty amazing how much they are capable of releasing. I've been seeing tons of little white things on my glass over the last couple of weeks and was wondering what they were. Now I know! I'm going to do a water change today to make sure it doesn't foul my water.

My corals seem to really like it though, they have their full feeding polyps out going crazy!

Restarted my tank almost 4 months ago and today spotted a baby Trochus snail on my overflow. I've bought 4 of them a couple months ago...!!! I found 2 more in my overflow eating. I should try to put them back in the main tank but they are hard to reach.

I've noticed the tank cloudy here or there too and was wondering what the hell has been going on. A couple years ago I had limpets spawn like crazy but I though it was because I had a ton of them. All I feed is pellets to my fancy snows...

Update: I've spotted over ten so far...! Different sizes meaning multiple spawns...I'm sure there much more. The bands are what helps spot them. Plus they are light colored being so fresh!

that's funny, mine spawned last week but it was the star snails.

I think you guys are not seeing what you think you are seeing. search Collonista snails.
Its a common reef hitchhiker snail that is confused for banded trochus snail babies.
