Anthias = jumpers???

So I just put a trio of Bimac Anthias into my 105g (rimless aquarium) and was told they are jumpers. I hate the look of screen tops, but I bought a kit anyway.

Before I go through the trouble of putting this together, is it necessary?

Also, do I need to cover the entire open top or could I make a pseudo Euro rim for it & only cover the fist 4"-5" around the perimeter?

thx!

Every fish is a jumper. I dont know where the notion of some fish jump and other dont comes from. Active swimmers that stay close to the surface of the water and that are easily scared are more likely to jump (Most notably wrasses fall in this groups. But anthias can definitely jump as well), but every fish can jump under right circumstances. . I have seen cleaner shrimps jumping out of the water, let alone fish.

I got 6 Anthias about a year ago. I lost one from shipping stress. One jumped in the first month. I was about to order a screen, but my wife vetoed. The other 4 have been fine.

I had a 75g fish only for 8 years before going to this 105g reef and I've never had a jumper. I have a leopard wrasse, chromis, tang, clown, and before I had all kinds of fishes.

I got the rimless because I like the look, don't want to ruin it with a screen.

But I also don't want to lose any of these new fish.

I might just build it and put on for the weekends & evenings when I am not near (it's in my office)

Pseudoanthias are twitchy and will jump if spooked.

Any fish can jump.... My adult powder brown tang took a leap of faith out of our 180 ..... a leap that proved not to be ideal for him

You can try a recessed lid where it sits on clips so its flush with the top. That would be the ideal for a rimless

Yeah, I bought the little clips & the kit. Just not sure I want it on there.

Seems like a pain come feeding time, testing time, etc when I need to get into the tank.

I think any fish can jump some are more likely. I think my Anthias look great so the risk for me is worth it.

Im glad I didnt get the screen, its been a year and I have lost 1 fish to jumping. I have lost 5 fish to me not knowing what I am doing / sickness / shipping. Having to mess with the screen for feeding, cleaning and such would be a pain. Plus my wife and I love the rimless clean look.

I have 4 orange lyretail anthias, and none of them have shown a tendency to jump (or even be near the surface of my rimless tank in the couple of months that I've had them. OTOH, I've had both a blue (regal) tang and an ocellaris clown jump out of a different rimless tank (the tang survived, the clown did not).

Jumpers jump and others jump when startled or scared.
When there's tons of room and lots of homes, jumps are less

They tend to get spooked easily, so yes they will jump, it's only a matter of time. I originally made a lid using a BRS kit, but now with my new tank I ordered a lid from toplids.

Just my opinion but all fish=jumpers. At some point any fish can jump and you should have some form of cover on your tank.

Like others have mentioned all fish are jumpers, don’t lose your investment due to carpet surfing
