Too much algae after cycling

I have finished cycling my tank and now I have all this algae and it’s taking over! I put an astrea snail inside and it died and it never was eating so idk. But my one Kenya tree is surviving and is now growing algae on the coral. What inverts can I put in the tank that will not die and will eat the algae. Thanks!

I agree, hermit crabs and snails do a very good job overall and are cheap for the most part. Blue leg and general assorted hermit crabs are carried in most fish stores. As for snails trochus are a good option and easy to keep. Is your coral in a lot of flow? Algae shouldn’t be able to grow that easily and that much if there is enough flow on it. If you can’t seem to get enough flow another small power head would be a good idea

One more thing, if the tank is new and you always have the lights on or it gets a lot of sunlight, algae will bloom a lot more.

All new tanks go through different stages of "the uglies" How old is your system? what are your nitrates and maybe more importantly phosphates.
Cheers! Mark

Tank has cycled for around a month now, not sure what level the nitrates are at but the guy at the aquarium store just said they are high. I do not know phosphates, and yes, the lights are on around 12hrs a day.

To maintain a nice reef tank, most of us become almost professional water parameter testers. Sounds like you need to get your first test kits: Salinity, Alk, nitrate and phosphate. I would not stress too much about algae in a tank as new as yours. Get yourself some Trocus snails, test the water, and work to get the nitrates and phosphates to good levels.
Cheers! Mark

Id lower the lighting from 12 hrs to a max of 8 until the tank matures..............That will help greatly in keeping down the algae. And maturing takes several months to a yr. usually.
