Flow in a Cylinder Tank, about to dive back in this crazy hobby
RC! It is good to be back. I've taken several years off from the hobby and I'm thinking of buying a cylinder tank that is almost 200G. I've always been a Vortech person, but due to curved glass that isn't an option. What pumps would you go with for flow in the cylinder tank? Thanks in advance!

Having worked on cylinder tanks for maintenance I personally would not have one.
Unless the sump is in the basement you will be EXTREMELY limited to what will fit underneath. As stated flow is a problem as well as a limited surface area for gas exchange. Very nice to look @ A PITA to work on.

I would think that the Gyre pumps would work well on a cylinder tank. You would just need to mount them vertically, but I think they would do a good job.

Tornado flow reversing every few minutes? lol
Keeping the walls coralline algae free will be a challenge. The round thick walls will also distort what your looking at inside a lot more than a flat surface. |

Cleaning the glass can be accomplished with a magnet turned vertically.
Magnavore IV is a good candidate if strong enough (probably). Sand is another story.

No, got if from someone right down the street in Florida.
Still struggling with the flow issues. Tank has a Water Blaster 10000, that also feeds UV in addition to return. I was given a Gyre 130 however I don't think it provides enough flow and it is LOUD. Maybe stick to tried and true Tunze/Hydor products? I sure wish the Vortechs would work on the cylinder.... |
