how about mdf for the floor (less bowing) and plywood for the sides?

My prototype model test tank will be built in the backyard at 50% scale 3' x 4' x 1.75'

was seriously thinking of mdf and flexseal instead of plywood and epoxy like the usual build.

I would not use mdf If you can find it .. HDF Would be a better choice if you MUST use this kind of material, Thou neither is suitable for the project for the fact they do not hold mechanical fasteners well as they are layered fibers.

HDF is treated with a fire rating similar to Drywall and can be water resistant depending on specs , We have used it a lot for high abuse areas such as schools Public building and hospital corridors and so on

Check with a Local Drywall commercial interior Supplier or contractor. they often will keep some in stock... ask for High impact Board..

but i ADVISE Against it...

The problem I have with plywood is that it is usually warped and twisted in large sheets. Even expensive 3/4" plywood goes all over the place.

You have to use some structural bracing.. You could actually build this out of plywood as well. but it takes up extra space on the exterior of the tank ...
