Question Sump help for 93 gallon cube!

I'm ordering a 93 gallon rimless cube with the corner flow with predrilled holes. My question is about sumps/refugiums. I need the best way to do this without killing my wallet. And need just general information. I have no idea what I'd need or what I'd need the stuff to do. I only have a 29 gallon so this is a big change for me :P Please help.

Just buy something like a 40 breeder from petco. They are on sale all the time.

you could turn your 29 into a sump or buy a 40breeder or 75. The more overall volume the better but that decision is up to your wallet.

You can have baffles cut at a local glass shop and use aquarium safe silicon to build it yourself. It is an easy DIY and will save you a few hundred over buying a pre built sump, and be just as good if not better suited to your specific needs.

Is there any info you guys can give me about setting this up? I think I want to do a refugium and a sump. I've seen it done in one tank I think. I'm kinda new to all of this still. Like the pumps and such to get the water flowing? Or what do put in them?

My advise is to start watching youtube videos and reading every thread you can find on said topic (refugiums, sumps, equipment, etc). Everyone sets up there tank for their own needs and there is really no right way of doing it. I'd google 93 gallon rimless setup and start looking at links of people that have the same set up and what they did. Usually you have a return pump that flows 10x's your tank volume or more. So 1000gph pump. I'd buy a 40 breeder as started above and turn into a sump. First chamber is where the water comes in middle section is for refugium and end chamber is for return pump. There are tons of threads where people actually post their renderings for how they set up their sumps. I'd get familiar with how you want to set this up and then start looking for parts.

I would get atleast a 40 if not 75. Then you must determine what pump to get, you'll want 5-10x your display volume in turn over. In this case you'll want a pump that will give you 500-1000gph.

You'll also want to consider a protein skimmer and download the manual for the one you end up selecting. It will help you in setting up compartments in your sump as it will give you dementions and operating depth etc.

The sump itself can bet set up as skimmer(drains drain into this compartment) > fuge > return.
Or

Skimmer > return < fuge.

The second being my prefered method allowing my to split my return line and control the flow to the fuge as opposed to everything flowing through it regardless. Both have pros and cons, you'll just have to do a bit of research and see what will work best for you.

First thing that should be asked: What are the dimensions of the stand? You might not get a 29g or 40gB in there.

There's lots of considerations that need to be taken into account: Skimmer size, return pump being used, running water level, refugium or not, ect ect.

Once you know what hardware you want in there, then you can figure out baffles, etc.

As mentioned, do some research on what a sump is, how it works, and the pro's/con's of design.

Here's a great website to learn from. On the left of the page are topics that will help you out, as well as some designs to think about: http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html

I'm actually looking to buy a 93 rimless with a corner overflow as well.
The dimensions I was quoted was 30"x30" by 24" high, which calculates to 93.5 gallons.
( 30*30*24 / 1728 ) * 7.48 = 93.5
Anyways, my point is, no 40 long or 29 or 30 or anything like that is going to fit into a 30" stand.
You may have to custom make a sump, or use a 30 x-high (if you can find one).
I suggest research based on your tank/stand size first.
Don't buy a 40 breeder or a 75, won't fit in the stand (at least the one i'm looking at)

I'm planning on buying a 93 as well, and have been looking at the deep blue 30g frag tank (24x24x12) to use as a sump, then add some baffles like this.

I like that design, thanks.
May want to make the return to hold more water though, just in case.

BTW, if you use the direct link with the picture icon, it will display in the thread.

A 29 is 30 inches long so depending on how the stand is built it might fit. Then the tank is only $29 at petco.

If I went with a 20 that would fit under my stand, would anyone recommend this? If so, how would I set it up?

That would work, but you could buy a used 20G off CL, go to Lowes and get some glass and silicone, and do it yourself for way cheaper.

And, the listing says the aquarium is NOT included, just the plastic. Way overpriced, IMO.
Buy that and you still need to buy the aquarium and the silicone.

Okay, I have a 20 gallon. Picked up one the other day and I'm researching equipment now so I know how much room I need in each section when it comes to that. I know I need a protein skimmer, return pumps and the stuff to finish tubing it. Do I need a protein skimmer that's recommended for 20 gallons? I read I can have my heater in my sump also, is that true? Would I just get a heater that's for 20 gallon tanks in that case? Thanks for all the help so far

You need to buy things rated for the size of the display tank, not the sump.
General consensus says to get 2 heaters in case one fails.

Any idea on a skimmer? I don't have a ton of cash so are there any that are low budget but efficient? Would I get one recommended for 113 gallons if I use a 20 galllon as the sump?

I tried finding a trigger sump like you mentioned, no luck. I guess I am going to just buy a pre made one with chambers but I need to find one that will work with a good size fuge.

This is the sump that came with my 93 when I purchased it used (Model 3):

It's OK but I would go custom for the price that thing cost new.
