Another Reef in the Desert

This thread will be to chronicle my 120 Tall mixed reef tank build. I purchased the tank used and built the stand. The tank is currently set up in my garage with just tap water as a test run, checking for leaks and functionality of the system. The equipment is as follows:
  • 120 Tall Tank 60" Long x 30" Tall x 16"
  • 20 Gallon Sump
  • Acqua C EV120 Skimmer Driven by a Mag 5 Pump
  • Mag 5 Pump Return
  • Closed Loop Recirculation driven by a Iwaki 480 Gal/hr pump
  • 80 lbs of dry rock that is currently curing in a 32 gallon brute can
  • 120 lbs of Carabsea special reef sand to be added when I move the system into the house.
  • I will be using the Jebernaut Plenum type system. I used this before very successfully.

I tested my live rock over the weekend.

Ammonia - .25
Nitrite - .015
Nitrate - 5.0

The tank is still running in the garage. All is good so far.

What exactly is a "Jebernaut Plenum" system?

Josh,

I may not have gotten my terminology correct. It's been ten years since I had a tank. It is where you have a dead space of water below the sand. My first attempt was a 55 gallon and I could not keep the Nitrates below 50 and I was doing a 25% water change every week. I then ran across Wet Web Media and this was the method they were using. I tore my tank down are set it up using their recipe and it worked. After a few weeks I never had another problem with nutrient control. I used the exact same rocks sand etc.......just changed my set-up.

Thanks for responding.

Dean

I have been seeing some cyanobacteria trying to make a comeback in my observation tank. I purchased a Red Sea Phosphate test kit. When I tested the water it showed near Zero Phosphates. I also purchased some Phosban. I am putting about 3 teaspoons in the filter bag and putting it in my Marineland filter. I am going to purchase a Calcium and Magnesium test kit soon. Overall the tank looks pretty good. Hopefully I will have some companions for Chester, the lone survivor of my tank wipe-out.

My current maintenance for the Observation Tank is:
1: Four gallon water change every two weeks
2: I take a small glass container and replace about 1 quart of water every day
3: Clean the filter in the Marineland Power filter every other day
4: Clean the glass every two weeks when I do a water change.

Cheers,

Dean

I was performing my bi-weekly maintenance on my display tank. I noticed that the Aqua C skimmer was not putting out many air bubbles. It is amazing how over time things change and then you suddenly notice that something is amiss. So I turned the air injector up and down and it did not make a difference. So I screwed out the injector and it was completely clogged up. I cleared it out and it is once again putting out a ton of bubbles.

Cheers,

Dean

A new Coral added to my 20 gallon Observation tank. It is some kind of Plating Montipora....at least that is what the LFS told me.

I received a Powder Brown Tang, McCosker's Flasher Wrasse and a Dispar Anthias on 4/16/19. They were added to my QT tank. I fed them on 4/17/19 and the Tang and Wrasse ate but the Dispar was still hiding. I am changing 1 gallon of water a day and removing any debris that is collecting on the bottom of the tank.

Some bad news, the McCosker's Flasher Wrasse passed away on 4/18/19. I contacted Live Aqua and within 6 hours I had a response that they would credit the costs back to my account. That was good. The Powder Brown Tang is eating like a pig but the Dispar Anthias is still hiding in the PVC tubes. I am putting some Mysis Shrimp in a pipette and squirting it in the tube, but I can't tell if he is eating. Tomorrow I am starting a regiment of PraziPro and then Copper.

I did a 2 gallon water change on 4/21/19. I noticed a change in the appetite of the Tang. It did not eat like it did before the PraziPro. I am going to wait until 4/25/19 and do another round of PraziPro. Both the Tang and Dispar looked good.

I bought some frozen Brine Shrimp and the Disbar took to eating that. He is coming out of the PVC tubes now when no one is present.

I also started my second round of PraziPro. I added another 1/2 teaspoon to the QT tank.

I did a 2 gallon water change today which is 25% of the water volume. I put the carbon back in as well. the Tang is eating really well and the Disbar is coming out of the PVC tubes as well. I will wait until the end of the week and then I will start the Copper treatment.
