What type of drain/overflow system do you have?
Do you have the ability to adjust the return pump flow? (dc pump? valve on output? divert some back to sump?) Pictures?

dc pump with variable speed running at lowest setting. no valves. return feeds two overflows and i have two returns coming down to two filter socks in the sump.

2 overflows? as in 2 corner overflows?
each with a single drain pipe? Setup as a durso? herbie?

its a 125 gallon aqueon tank with two overflows. each over flow has one durso return and one pipe from the return pump. drain pipes are not shared.

I'd modify your overflows from a Durso to a simple Herbie per side. Use both holes per overflow section for water-to-sump. One hole is your main drain adjusted with a gate valve. The 2nd hole is adjusted to be an emergency pipe just above the overflow water level just waiting for a bad day. Use the returning water on a separate line up to the display tank. The key for silence was to make a "U" shape slant cut on the emergency pipes top near the water line. The rushing water wanted to splash in making noise. The high side of the slant cut acts as a barricade to the rushing water. The low side of the slant cut lets the calm water almost come in. To answer your question on the pipe to the sock area: I'd bury the pipe in the sump water's 1st chamber and get rid of the poly sock. If you use a paint strainer micron MESH bag, the bag will trap a ton of detritus as well as swell open to fill out like a parachute and the water will have a fat calm area to pass. Tie the Micron mesh bag to hold it up. Use the mesh bag (no plastic ring) like a condom over the main drain pipe. The mesh bag will be easier to clean than a poly sock. I assume the skimmer in the next section will be taking the smaller bits of detritus out for you effectively. The bag on the main drains will be good for larger chunks. Use a huge 50 micron or 75 bag. They use them for making almond milk too. Link to bag. +1. I’d suggest not dropping the level of the overflow intake pipe too low inside the sump water level. The pipe needs to be able to push the last bits of air down and out of the pipe to restart the full syphon any time it stops/restarts. About an 1 1/2” for 1” diameter, but that’s a super rough rule.
