Uronema on this Nigripes

What do you think. Hard to get a good picture. Reddish sore on her forehead. Developed over last two days and I don’t think it is an injury. She is in a QT.

Treatment suggestions? I have acriflavine, metroplex, Septra, Chloroquine phosphate and others. I have read some of the threads, but would appreciate input.

She is eating well and has no other signs of problems.

Thanks,
Mark

Is this a new fish or one you had for a while?

Is this wound flat like a sore or deep as a cut or like something took a bite?

It appears as a wound. Fairly roundish. Reddish, but the fish is a red orange color anyway. On profile, the area is raised like a bump that was not there originally. Not a cut and nothing likely to bite it in the QT. Houses with a smaller male nigripes and a single flasher wrasse.

Fresh QT with seeded media, no meds yet, ammonia badge and I have been watching the water quality closely. No signs of anything on the male.

It might be a good idea to treat against Uronema.
My first choice would be formalin baths, but if you are confident that your CP is good you may as well use that or any other medication that has shown to be effective against Uronema.

I do have formalin, but is is probably two years old. I cannot find any dates on the bottle. I would guess it is ok as it is been in a cool dark cabinet. I will do the formalin bath and the treat with CP (from Diamondback). hopefully that does it. Thanks for the help!!

Formalin is not usually used on fish with open wounds. I would stick with antibiotics for now

As long as the formalin is stabilized with methanol and didn't get too cold (below 5°C I think) it should be fine and usable indefinitely.
If it has gotten too cold there should be precipitate (I think whitish) on the bottom of the container. If that is the case don't use it as it will have become highly toxic.

I have Formalin MS by FishVet. Only indicates one ingredient (formaldehyde) at 37%. It just been in a cabinet in our house so no extreme temperatures.

I have fish Sulfa Forte from Thomas Labs. Are you recommending that instead of one of the others or in addition to them?

That should contain also methanol as a stabilizer.

I order this now as Formalin MS has become hard to find: 37% Formaldehyde 250ml (approx 8 Fl Oz) UPC grade.

Nigripes Update

Thanks for the source on the Formalin!

I am beginning to think what I am seeing on its forehead is an injury. My QT is in our utility room and I went in to get a drink last night from the refrigerator. I am always careful to keep the lights out, but she freaked out. Very little light from the hall and very little from the fridge, but even after I got it 100% dark again, she was still jumping. I have a screen top but I can see she may have possibly jumped and hit the frame, edge of the tank or run into the power head. Using antibiotics and monitoring her.

Thanks!!

If it is an injury Stress Guard might be a good option.

I would definately just monitor for now.

Like Marina mentioned you cannot use Formalin on any fish with an open wound or cut. It's a 100% sure way to kill a fish.

Getting Better

Thanks for all the assistance!!!

It seems that it was more likely an injury from jumping. The affected area is not getting any worse and in fact, I think it looks better. I have been dosing antibiotics and nothing else in the QT. She is eating pretty well so I am hopeful.

Thanks!!!

Good to hear. Pretty soon you will need antibiotics for the bites from her jaws
