Wow, haven't visited this thread for a while - some wacky advice masquerading as expertise. Achilles is a swimmer and needs both space and flow. Relying on any part of the ornamental fish supply chain for any kind of effective quarantine is folly. Juveniles often have an in distinct or less full colored 'teardrop'. Nori important, but meaty foods also required.
I have had mine now for four years. Though it is on the smaller side at about 5", it's in full adult colors. Eats nori, pellets, brine and the larger PE mysis. It's holding a healthy body weight. My tank also has ich and the AT is now mostly immune. Probably the most aggressive of all my tangs to newcomers despite not being the largest.

you have any pic or video of all 6 swimming together? My Achilies is almost 1 year in my tank, and I am thinking of trying another one if possible

It absolutely blows my mind that you say that ich is not a bad thing to have. Ich is usually fatal if left untreated. Sure, there are worse diseases/parasites out there but ich is still a concern. Do some research, you seem to be a 'parrot' to what you have heard at/around your LFS.

So a small update. I got two Achilles from a buddy who broke his tank down. They aren't large, perhaps 4 inches. They are eating but not pigging out. To avoid destruction I caught my AT Friday night and moved him into the sump as he is 1.5 times their size and much fatter.
I will have him hang out in the sump for a few days (maybe 3 days or so) and then move him back into the DT. Hoping they can coexist. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Hi guys,
Planning to get an Achilles Tang in the next few months and have been doing some research. One thing that worries me is that I only have a 20-gallon QT. I was planning to have it acclimated by a 1 hour drip acclimation followed by a 1 hour paraguard treatment. Question is, would it be too stressful for the fisth? And is the QT too small? Because if it is, I won't force my way to get one. Thanks. |

20 gal is probably too small. I used a 30L to QT my Achilles. BTW, if you use a QT, match salinity to incoming bag and no drip is necessary.

I'm an 'imperial guy' ..... 30L is a 30 gal long tank, not litres.

No it was a perfectly reasonable question. Welcome to RC by the way.

Thanks for the welcome. For now, would want to read more on it, and see if some others would post a reply.

Very nice. Never been brave enough to try two in one tank. Generally I only keep one Acanthurus genus at a time. Is that tank 8'?

Yes 8 ft tank with several tangs. I qt them togather with separaters then slowly moved them into each other's space and after qt moved all of them in 1 shot into main with lights off. Never had any problem with 8 tangs in the tank.
2 achellies 2 yellow tang 2 hippo 1 powder blue 1. Purple tang

It's been a while since I checked on this thread. Wanted to share progress with my tang. I've now had him for 3y 8mo. Tank is ick free so no problem there. He eats anything now, normal feeding is pe mysis or hikari spirulina brine, along with NLS pellets and nori.
He seems healthy and happy, though some more fat wouldn't hurt. Having had him for a while now, I think the key to success is the early months. Good qt, eradicating ich, and getting them to eat. After that, they seem fairly hardy. |

Lost mine after 48hrs in quarrantine in my 20g QT. Used Cupermine and fresh SW from LFS but he never ate and hid away the whole time. Not real active and attempt to move him to my DT for more space and water flow (its a 210g) didn't work. Moved back to QT and he expired soon after.
Man these are fragile. I have great success with Clown Tangs x2 and maybe I'll stick with them. Cheveron and Purple Tangs too all with good results so I was super sad..but sight unseen purchase from LA over Labor Day and my 1st AT try. Will try again but next time will take a look at this post again carefully. |
