Reincarnation of a nano reef tank! Yes or No?
Hello everyone.
I have a Innovative Marine 16g white. I have had the tank for about 4 years. I learned everything I know about reefing with this tank. I still like it and everything thrives in it. But I have come to not like the choice of a white tank that I made years ago. I am looking into changing tanks. Not to a bigger nor smaller. I want to get the same tank but in black. Actually it will be somewhat bigger.. Its the Innovative marine 20g black. I have given this a lot of thought but I haven't decided yet. So I am asking you guys. Do you think it will be a good idea to just transfer EVERYTHING from my old tank into the new, in the exact same configuration? Or will this upset everything and all my corals and fishes will die? PS: My current stock is a cleaner shrimp. A pair of clowns. 3-4 SPS, a few LPS and a gorgonian that I keep pruning every now and then. |

I think you would be able to transfer everything except for the sand bed. That, I would make sure it is new sand or go barebottom. I would use about 10 gallons of new salt water and 10 gallons from your existing system. Due to the tanks being so close in size, should be an easy transition.

yup does not sound like an issue just use 15g from old then new 5g new (what I would do)
Get your self some live sand and when you transfer over make sure it is temp, salinity, and ph are all the same. Also make sure live rocks are transferred quick and do not add anything new to the tank beside your existing stock

Do you want black on black on black or are you going to keep the white sand? That BBB looks awesome, especially in a freshwater tank, but if you want to keep the white sand I would probably siphon out the top 1/4" or so and set this aside. Clean the rest with the garden hose and then put the live sand on top of that. The whole process of moving things from one place to another is actually a piece of cake. Just plan it out, take your time etc. GL.

No reason why the shouldn't, just think of it as a large water change and a fresh sandbed...unless you go BB that is.

Hello guys!
Thanks for all the answers. I received the new tank yesterday and I did a leak test and also cleaned it with freshwater. Either this weekend or the other I will be doing the transfer. I decided to transfer everything as is except the sanded. I bought a new bag of live sand. My ONLY concern is that I will not go through a mini cycle and lose fish and corals! |

You will probably skip the cycle completely as there will be no die off from the transfer. So you shouldn't have to worry.

I shouldnt say probably, you will definitely skip the cycle as long as you transfer everything over quickly. The only way you will see a cycle is if some of the bacteria or critters on the rock dies off during a long period out of water during the transfer.

Hello everyone!
I made the transition. All went well. Everything looks happy except my stylophora. But that particular coral has always been somewhat finicky. I’m will be posting a picture of the new tank as soon as I’m on the computer. Thanks again for the feedback and opinions |

Looks awesome, but I really hope you have somewhere to put that tang. A 20g is torture for it
