Thumbs up Why nobody monitors Ammonia but everyone should.

Why nobody monitors Ammonia but everyone should.

When is the last time you tested your ammonia in your mature system? Well that’s a rhetorical question I guess. I am going to guess never or at least rarely. Why would you, the system is mature the fish look good and the corals are doing well. Great! So lets now ask when was the last time you tested your nitrate? Argh! Now we have a question. For many if not all the answer should be regularly. But have you ever stopped to think, where did that nitrate come from, did it just produce itself? Of course the answer is no. Nitrate is the last part of the De-nitrification cycle, so logically if you have nitrate you have had ammonia, but in a mature system it is kept below detectable levels when all things are running at optimum. However in an aquarium it is rare to keep things always at optimum and so it is logical to assume if your nitrate has risen ergo your ammonia level did 2-5 days previous. But you were not testing ammonia so you did not see it until its too late but saw it in a nitrate spike instead, by then the damage to fish gills and invertebrates is done.

So imagine having the opportunity to monitor not only your ammonia but also your ammonium 24/7? Of course ammonium is safe providing other parameters especially pH stay within range, but a rising ammonium level points directly to nutrient levels in the aquarium rising. Maybe time to do that water change?

What other benefits are there for monitoring ammonia? Zeolith systems or Low nutrient systems use Zeo Lith rock, when this rock ages it can start to put back into the tank ammonia, so by monitoring your ammonia levels even if 9/10 undetectable you have an emergency monitor to warn you when leaching starts to occur.

Even the slightest spike in ammonia is an instant alarm bell something is not right in your system and if caught early enough by monitoring it continually you have an advanced warning system things are not quite right.

There is only one device on the market that can do this along with monitoring pH temp and in the Reef unit also your lighting levels. The Seneye Aquarium Life support systems will look after your expensive investment from any issue with the bio load of your tank, and as we all know your bio system is the heart of any successful aquarium.

So look into Seneye, its more than just another monitor but your lifeline to long term aquarium health.
