Tangs in 6 Feet long 45 Gallon tank.
Hello Experts,
I am planning to install an penninsula type reef aquarium of the below dimensions. Dimensions: 12" L x 72" W x 12" H I would do it as a mixed reef tank. Now my question is, will it be find to house tangs in this long tank ? Please not I will not keep the tangs for more than 2 years, so won't keep it till it fully grows, and will buy them as juveniles. Please suggest atleast 3 of the appropriate tang species for this type of setup. Thanks. |

That's one skinny, short tank! That being said, what kind of aquascaping are you planning? With so little space, anything you put in there will greatly impact the swimming room.
With the above in mind, if you are truly going to keep the tangs for only two years, almost any juvenile tang could do well in a tank with those dimensions. Three tangs might be pushing your luck, especially with regard to your filtration. If I were going to put a juvenile tang in that particular tank, I'd put in a blue hepatus tang, or a yellow or purple tang (Zebrasoma sp.). Kevin

Thanks. Yes I will try to maintain the water in pristine conditions with enough filtration. Heard very good reviews about marine pure blocks. I am planning to employ 2 of these blocks along with chaeto running under AI prime HD lights to outcompete the algae for nutrition in display tank running with current usa 72 inch led.
Aquascaping will be kind of pretty open concept with corals here and there. So I hope there will be ample room for straight swim for these tangs. |

What do u think about tanks in being there with ability to swim straight through the tank ? Heard deep and wide tanks are not necessary, since tangs tend to swim straight mostly. |

Monti is fine, Acros are one of the most difficult.
Not sure on the just swim straight thing, kinda really narrow, what happens if the yellow creates a territory and a blue wants to keep swimming by? Won't this be stressful? Never seen a tank a fully stocked tank in those dims....interesting... |

Boy. I would really rethink the dimensions. I can't imagine that you can't go at least deeper - maybe 20". It will end up being kind of a funky nano IMO. I would just hate for you to do all of this planning and spend $$$ and then regret not having more volume (which would not have cost much more at all). In fact if you can fit a standard dimension tank, it likely would be a lot cheaper [or a lot nicer/rimless etc]. $0.02

Not that I would recommend, but many people put kole and yellow tanks in 13" wide 55g tanks.
Any chance you could go a few more inches wide and taller? Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk |

It's going to be a custom tank. I have asked for quotes already with rimless starphire glass. If I keep the tangs only for 2 years, should it do ? |

I would not recommend it. What are you thinking you will do with them in 2 years?

I had a friend with a tank similar to what you are mentioning. He had a couple small fish and that was it. Tangs...well I think I’d pass. Guess you could try some small juveniles but I think by time you aquascape, add a few corals you will be out of room fast. Any growth at all will reduce open space even more. I don’t think the height is as much of an issue as the width. If you could do 24” width I think it would be doable and look better as well.
