IMO, the more live rocks in your tank is better. The thing is your tank doesn't has enough room to fill up the rocks.

I keep some rubble in my sump.
I tried out a refugium section in my sump, but the chaeto just melted. Switched to a turf scrubber and threw some rubble in. It's a great place for pods to breed, and that was my plan, and the sole reason I have rubble in the sump. If I did not have a dedicated pod eater, that section would probably be empty.

Even a minimalist tank has plenty of biological activity to support even a heavy bio load. I like my tank and sump bare bottom. easier to keep clean

I should point out that, yes, you really don't have to put live rock in your sump if you have plenty in your display.
However, when you keep fish for decades, you'll become paranoid, er, I mean wise. You'll realize Murphy was an optimist, and you may get too busy to notice your Tang has been missing for a week, and that it's been rotting underneath that big Montipora in the center of your tank. Or you may forget about those sand-sifting sea stars which died under the sand (So that's why there are so many bristle worms!). Or your cat barfed in your sump. (Don't ask). You really cannot have too much bacteria. |

I have quite a bit of rock in my sump now.....
It wasn't a planned thing, just kind of happened as I took more and more rock out of the DT. I didn't want to dry them out since they're from TBS, but I have quite a bit of matrix in the sump as well so it's probably not necessary to actually keep it. I think I probably only have around 15lbs of rock in the DT at this point in a 80g tank.
