Weird elegance coral issue
I've had an elegance coral for several months now, and it was very happy until about a month ago. Half of the coral doesn't extend. I've been watching it, expecting it to die from some unknown problem, but it hasn't; it just won't extend half of the meat much. That part isn't dead, the margins look fine, and nothing is harassing it (checked for bristleworms, aiptasia, etc.). I thought it might have been a flow change, so I turned it 180 degrees, but the same half just won't extend.
Thoughts on what I can check for? It's a nice little coral and I'd like to help it if I can...been this way for a month.

I don't know exactly what's wrong with your coral, but the link below might help.
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-01/eb/index.php I'm assuming both your parameters and your other corals are ok? |

Yes, I should have mentioned that. And this one was fine until a month ago. But that section hasn't died, or had the margins recede...the meat just won't come out.

There is a pest called a gall crab that will bore a hole in the skeleton of elegance corals. Maybe other corals too, but I had one in my elegance and had a similar problem. Mine had a pencil eraser sized hole in it near the top of the skeleton. I removed it and within a few weeks mine was extending fully again.
Take a close look and see if there are any holes in the skeleton. The crab may not be visible because they roll up in the hole and are hidden. |

Interesting. Took a close look, but no holes bored...was really hoping that was it. However, on closer inspection i found that the bottom of the coral is covered in little crevices, presumably from being cut away from the mother colony. About half these crevices had little bristleworms in them. I've removed a bunch, will hunt for more, but I don't know if that's potentially the problem. Can I seal up the crevices at the bottom (superglue, etc.), or does the coral need them to breath?
