Question Palythoa Eradication?

Anyone have good recommendations on how to kill some palythoa? They're more resilient than any aiptasia.

I've been injecting them with kalk about once a week but they recover quick! I can't remove the rock so I need an in-tank solution.

They were one of my first corals about 7 years ago but some are now taking over a huge rock that is prime real estate for some more SPS.

Thanks!

Im following along on this one, I am in the same situation and have pondered on getting a cr@p load of sundial snails to take them out. Or selling them to people as angel food.

You could try blasting them with boiling water (turkey baster) or look for some zoa nudis (will take out other zoas though).

Run carbon in case they release palytoxin in the water.

give them a name like 'super duper double chocolate eyelashes' and charge $30 a polyp.
people will voluntarily pay you to let them remove them from the tank for you...

You never know in todays "name gimmick" market, good solid idea Rick!

Good luck. There have been several thread lately on this subject with no solution.

I personally have tried Joe's Juice, Lemon juice, vinegar, Pickling lime, Kalk, NaOH, and some other Aptasia remedy without success.

I have learned: 1. If they are ugly and brown they grow like weeds. 2. If they are beautiful they might morph in to number one.

What if you just cut where you wanted them gone and putty'd over that so they don't come back? Or putty another small piece of rock over that spot so you don't have to look at the putty?

I use a syringe and inject them with a drop or two of bleach.

Yes, I'm nuts, but it works.

Wow! Bleach. That's too daring for me to try.

I've tried most if not all aiptasia tricks and no luck. Sounds like I'm almost out of luck.

At least they're a decent bright green color.

If I can find the right tool I might try to cut/chip the top of the rock off. Its just a large area and my 8" bone cutters probably wouldn't work too well. If I find the solution I'll let y'all know.

You should be able to slide a wood chisel into the rock and under the proto's.

A chisel could work. I just worry about tapping on it too much and damaging the tank. I'll have to see how hard the rock is. It's a pretty porous rock too so some of the palys are attached deep in some holes.

Salamander, I'm in the same boat as you. I thought about taking a razor blade and skimming the surface of the rock and get as much of the Palys as I can. I was jsut worried about palytoxin being released into the water column.

I think I'm going to do this. I'll just take a small patch out every day until they are gone.

run plenty of carbon if your cutting proto's.
If your going to use a chisel, you shouldn't need to use a hammer and I wouldn't recommend doing it in the tank as you just may pop the tank.

carbonate rock is pretty soft and you should be able to just wiggle it into the rock and under the zoas.
practice on a spare rock first and be careful on where the blade may go if it gets away from you.
putting a sharp chisel thru your leg with paly toxin on it may ruin the rest of your day.

I tried the bleach and it didn't work. May have been old bleach. I use hemostats to pull them off the rocks. Do your best to get the bases of the polyps or they'll be back.

I can see how that could be bad!

Whatever I do will have to be in the tank unfortunately. The rock is huge, supports a few other large rocks and there all covered in SPS that I think would be fragged beyond belief if I tried to pull everything out.

I'll try the chisel this weekend and see how it works.

Maybe it was a fluke, but I experimented a couple weeks ago and laid a nice clump of Aiptasia X on a Paly...just to see if it would knock it out.

I shut the pumps off so the Aiptasia X would sit on the Paly.

Nuke'd him for sure.

No fluke. Its the only way I know how without completely disturbing them and risking a toxic out break. The best way to kill them other than AptasiaX is to remove the sand. They are comprised primarily of it, at least the What the call Texas Trash Palys. Greenish blue, stings the **** outta nearly everything aroumd them and multiply like rabbits.... Yep those guys. I put a rock with them all over the bottom into my BB leather tank and they shrivled up over time. I have a clump of them I can't figure out what to do with. They suck.

Careful how you handle them. Are you aware ot the toxic nature of Palys? When I was ignorant, I tried scrubbing them of and treating with Hydrogen Peroxide. Spent 3 days in the hospital.
