The tank is covered with black trash bags. Lights out for 3 days. Fingers crossed that it takes care of the dino's!

I have not yet^
I will take the advice and keep it covered for 4-5 days. I also noticed a huge spot on the DT glass with what looked to be a new colony of red bugs before I wrapped it up. Ugggggg. I cannot win!!! 3 treatments of interceptor over 3 weeks must not have done the trick. And I lost my blue tort colony that had grown out so much I am tempted to drain the tank, get rid of all the livestock and rock and start over if I don't get some better luck soon. So frustrating.

Hang in there. I hope you're checking out the Dino flagellate thread. In my experience very few people actually end up taking down the tank because of this problem

in addition to the lights out, have you tried to elevate the ph, can use kalk, or co2 absorbing media to raise, or both, and no water changes, blow the rocks, siphon out as much as possible, i use a hose w turkey baster attached, start a siphon and stick it in the filter sock in the sump w 25 micron sock, took a few months but it finally went away.

I am trying the lights out method before I start messing with PH, ALk or Mag. I don't really like messing with those levels too much.
It's not just the dino's that have me stressed about the tank. It's just all the issues I have had since I set it up. We all go through these stages though. I have been there before and prevailed. I hope this will be the same.

It's been 4 days. I will probably remove the bags tonight or tomorrow morning. I hope I haven't lost anything else..

Hi there, I flipped through your build thread... very impressive! I wanted to chime in as I just went through the exact same thing you are going through. I started off with 50lbs of marco rocks in my new 100 gallon tank and had nothing but trouble. I had cloudy water for over 2 months and snotty/slimey nasty algae everywhere! It covered the pumps and clogged my skimmer and it was all over my sump. I finally ripped out all of the marco and went with some nice tampa bay live rock. The stuff is amazing and my tank is already 10X better and just looks healthy and is thriving. Unfortunately, I believe your issue is stemming from the marco rocks. When I would text PO4, it never registered over 0.04 on the hanna, so I am not sure that was problem. When I pulled out my rock it smelled so bad... like rotten eggs and dirty socks lol. All I know, is I will never use Marco rock again. Here are a couple pics of the nasty slime I would pull out daily!
And here is a pic from last week with my new TBS LR!

This was the worst that my tank got with dino's. I ended up doing a three week blackout. I removed all my corals that were not stuck to the rocks. After three weeks my nitrates shot up over 100. All that algae was soaking it up like a sponge. I did as large a water change as I could, about 95 gallons on a 120 DT. About 85% total. This was mid 2014. I have not seen any since. FYI, GFO can actually feed this stuff. Something about the iron content, so I did not run it at all during his time. I struggled with it for months and went through two treatments of chemiclean. Didn't know it was not cyano at the time..... You need to starve it out, remove its foodsource and replace the algae with something more....controllable. Go ahead with your ATS. Make it a big one. P.S. Add more fish and especially coral. Coral can suck up nutrients quite efficiently. Your tank looks a little too sparse. I have 22 fish and 5 tangs in my 120, and I am adding more after my basement filter upgrade... Daniel. |

I recently had a crazy hair algae bloom on my tank that lasted for 6-7 months easy! My tank for the past 2 weeks have just recovered from it but all of the PO4 came from the rock (it was used before taken out and seat in a box dry) but I had to stick to water changes, I setup a scrub in my sump and have been replacing GFO every 12 days. Stick with it

So far, all is still well.
We added a Scopas tang (wife's new favorite fish), a yellow tang and a small pink tail trigger (was my favorite fish as a kid). Trigger is being a model citizen. New tank shots will be coming soon.
