Suggestions on selling/take down of my 120
After 15+ years, thinking of taking it down (120gal). We are having some interior work/painting done and thinking now might be the time.
First, for those who ask why? I have loved this hobby for over 15 years (20 if you count FW). We are looking to downsize house, so having some work done. Although retirement is still a few years away, we plan to be on the road at that point. A tank will not work then. Just thinking that now might be the time. The only decision point is whether to take it down now or in a year or two down the road. I am thinking now. Yes, I will miss it. No, I will not be putting another tank up down the road - guaranteed. Any suggestions on how to price and sell? Ideally, I want to sell the entire system to someone. Also, not in a hurry. Thoughts? Ideas? Tim |

I did the same thing two years ago. Your best bet is to try to sell to someone locally.

First off, that’s a beautiful tank. Do you have any local reef clubs? You may be able to sell to someone locally through there that is looking for an upgrade. If what happens to your livestock matters to you, at least then you can tell if the person who is buying it knows what they are doing and your livestock has the best chance for survival with someone experienced. If not craigslist may be an option, but I personally would try a reef club first because you have a better chance of finding someone who knows what they are buying and will give you a fair price. Someone from Craigslist looking to start up and doesn’t know what they are doing may lowball you not realizing how much your equipment actually is worth.

You are better off selling the corals and fish first, then the rocks, drain it donated the sand and sell the tank as a whole. It is very daunting to do it all at one time.

It's hard, but not impossible to sell it all together. You'll likely recoup more by parting it all out though.

^^^ this. Quicker to sell all at once but you'll make more $ parting it out

I listed an old tank as a package and found it was easier to sell the parts separately. For whatever reason most people already have their own parts and really only need the tank/stand.
