Basic sump question

I'm going to start working on building a sump for my 75gallon reef tank and I'm wondering what the recommended size for a sump would be?

Fish
-2 ocellaris clowns
-1 yellow tang
-1 wheeler goby
-1 fire fish

Coral
-star polyps
-green star polyp leather
-cabbage leather
-frogspawn
-misc polyps

As big as you can go!
I use a 20 long under my 75. If I could have fit larger, I would have. You need to think about what equipment the sump will hold, skimmer, heaters, etc., and make sure everything will fit and be easily removed for maintenance.

I'll probably keep my protein skimmer and heater in the display tank, what do you think the minimum size would be that would still be beneficial

Honestly, I think getting your equipment out of the DT is one of the main benefits of a sump. Why are you adding the sump? Extra water volume?

Extra water volume and I want to add some macro algae but I don't want it taking over the DT

As big as you can fit in your cabinet and still have room for any other equipment you want to keep in there.

I used a 20long. If I could have gone with a larger sump I would have.

That said, I'm glad I didn't go larger as it allowed plenty of room for a top off container and a gallon of vinegar for dosing.

I built a 16.5 X 30" (OD) for my 75 from .25" acrylic. It's about 16" high. It has two bays; skimmer & return. It has a bubble trap in the middle. Those dimensions fit under the stand and allow about 16" of room for my external pump, and when I need them, dosing pumps & 2 or 3 jugs.
