Overflow - Teeth or Not - Page 2

Wouldn't a screen work better than the egg crate to keep the lil critters out in the overflow area?

I've got a civil engineering reference manual that I used when studying for the PE exam. It's got some helpful formulas for figuring flow through a weir. I used it when building my tank and the formulas worked out to be pretty close to real world. I love it when that happens.

If you run no teeth you just need to use gutter guard to keep the animals out.

Toothless and love it. Toothless will skim more surface than other, toothless tends to be quieter. I made a simple creature guard of black nylon gutter guard by bowing it up long ways and inserting it down into my black acrylic weir, it disappears and stop migration into drains of any but the smallest animals which teeth couldn't keep out either.

Those weir numbers were for smooth weirs though, weren't they?

I'll have to double check.

I'm a CE but practice structural. All the weir/pipe flow stuff I had to learn was by force.

I believe the toothed overflow falls into the contracted weir type and the toothless is suppressed.

I did drill holes. Had to find a way to keep an octopus from getting into the overflow!

My experiences; I have no teeth on my overflow. I got about 50% left in my mouth. I'm over 50. I feel ahead of the game if I live to 100....... Some fish love the overflow box. Once they know its there you can't keep them out. Water slide for fish. Good fun. When adding a new fish, I found that screening it off for a few days can be a good thing. If they cant get in after a few tries they give up. When sleeping some clowns float around and can get swept in. They usually only do this once. They are no dumb bunny.

I have coast to coast and use a small strip of eggcrate to stop being g stuff. Had someone describe the new ghost overflow design and weir is removable for cleaning so he describ d when you remove a rush of water will flow better into overflow so it holds back more water than we think

I would definitely make sure you have teeth on it if you have any kind of fish.
