I am having a bit of an algae issue in my new grow out tank. I left for 4 days and came home to things covered in algae. Partially new equipment and balancing the light but also due to me not putting anything in there to eat it as it grows out.

Actually have some peroxide coming to deal with the frag racks...

Well seeing as I cant get fish to live, and the couple SPS I do have are thriving, and I've been on R 2 R way to much, and all the SPS eye candy postings, I bought a battlebox from battlecorals.

From what I've seen and/or read Adam has some of the best and healthiest SPS in the business.

I do, still have that 30 Gal but hoping to upgrade to a 45 and eventually a 75. Still have my two clown and a small baby hippo.

Other than that just been really busy with life lol. I’m taking things really really slow with the tank and buy things for it here and there but very seldomly. I’m really wanting to do that upgrade so I’m excited to find the right tank soon.

Glad to see your still around, and still with a tank!

When my lights come up this morning, I'll grab a couple FTS.

Those battle boxes look good too, though frankly they're just more gamification of another facet of life(which deeply offends me). Dangerous game. But you can't go wrong with BC, I've loved the few frags I've picked up from them.

Good luck, hang in there, and you'll find your happy spot, you're probably almost there.

Ok I have to admit, I'm lost on this one. I only got it because his SPS look very nice and he has good rep on the forums. All the battle boxes are is you pay a flat rate, and he hand picks corals for you. Seeing as I have no clue what to look for or whats easy and whatrs hard, I figured this was a good way to get a few easier SPS frags. I did personally talk to Adam on the phone(he calls every customer to speak to them when they order a battlebox), so he knew what to kind of look for when he picked out my box. I see no SPS anywhere in this neck of the woods anyways, so having them shipped in is only logical.

And crap sorry I got called into work this morning and haven't grabbed any pics yet. I will get some up here soon though.

The gamification comes from the fact that you do not know what you are getting and hope you get something above the value of the box. It is a bit of a game similar to numeros other retailers with mystery boxes.

Ahh ok I got ya now. Not sure why that would deeply offend him, but to each their own.

You both know SPS better then me, so tell me from these pics. I payed 225$(with S&H)for 4, got 5.

Purple pocclipora, pretty chunky frag. About twice what you game Soul, but the same exact coral. Although he called it purple with yellow tips.

He called this a Rainbow Pocci, just looks green to me. lol

June Ruby. Probably a 3" frag. Very tall. with dark green skin and dark brown polyps. Very pretty in person actually.

Miss Scarlet Probably 2" Very deep red skin and bright red polyps. This picture does it no justice, it's a much deeper red.

Shades of fall Little tiny "nub" maybe 1/2" Light green skin, dark red tip, have not seen polyps yet. Looks very similar to SS I got from Soul that died. Then again, most of them look the same to me with slight color variations. lmao

All in all I don't think I got a bad deal, considering the one SPS I have bought was 100$ for a 2" frag of green slimer. This shops prices went up from 100$. But it is the one place I have seen any SPS for sale.

Was going to post how the one I got from Soul looked the same and how big it has gotten. This is just about a year in my tank, is this decent growth Soul? It's about

It has gotten to be about 4" tall, 3 big branches off the main stalk, with many smaller "arms" off each of those stalks. I think it's stunted a bit because it's been fighting with that monti until recently when I broke "fragged" that monti.

I didn't mean to come off as too rude about the gamification, it's just turned into such a huge thing now, and is effectively gambling called something more family friendly. It also annoys me because it's in all of the games that people play these days too, to incorporate that gambling high. I bet soulpatch knows from his Xbox experiences.

Anyway, you got a nice haul. The shades of fall is known to be a spectacular coral. The other two acros I've never heard of before but I'm glad you're already enjoying the colors. The rainbow pocci should be very nice as well, and looks good and is an easy coral and good grower. Same as the purple.

The reason I don't like the boxes is because I'd be mad if I got pocillapora (and two of them!) Having had them spawn in my tank and grow everywhere as mini colonies. But it does give you a nice mixture of interesting corals for a solid price, and it really makes sense for you since you don't have a lot of prolific reefers local to you. Around here with $200 and a 30 minute car ride, I'd have all A list (okay, fine, A- list since WD/homewrecker are $100/each and you'd only have 2 corals then) corals, plus a freebie. But I think given the geography it makes sense. And I still like battlecorals and their reputation is well deserved.

Your tank is looking really good. I see the algae (or is it dinos) on the rock, but the corals and anemones look very healthy and colorful. The growth on your current birdsnest/Stylo/poccilopora looks good considering it's fighting with the monti, and that you've been trying various things to reduce your algae. No rush to grow monster corals that suck up nutrients and ca/alk.

I still keep in touch with Rakie from when we all had nanos, and he predominantly just still has spectacularly colored small frags instead of growing them into larger colonies, so as with everything in reefing, there are many different ways to succeed and success means different things to different people.

It’s looking great Homer! That’s also a huge month. I still haven’t got my hands wet with SPS but hopefully I’ll give it a try later this year.

Naa not rude, I was just confused as to why something like that would offend you deeply. But I get it now, and totally understand. For you close to several LFS's it doesn't make sense, but for someone like me who never see's any SPS in any LFS, it made sense to me. You know now that you mention it, I never thought of it like you spell it out. In reality the hobbiest can be totally screwed buy the "grab bag" type giveaways. One of the reasons I went with Adam at battle corals. I had read several threads and saw what came in 99% of his battle boxes so I wasn't hesitant on ordered one from him. Heck he even went above and beyond calling me at every step of the box in the transit process(I told him I never get any priority mail until well after 4pm). This guy really goes above and beyond with his corals, and tries very hard to make sure his customers are happy.

I have however seen exactly what your talking about. Guy paid 500$ for a "grab bag" of "high end" corals. I won't mention the well know vendor, I'll leave it up to you guys to go find the thread(I don't like to speak badly about vendors I have never dealt with). Anyways he basically got a couple cheap brown acans, and a handful of dead/dying softies. Might have been 100$ in coral(if your into softies). But yeah I get ya now.

FYI, I get no thrill out of gambling. lol I wont even go to the turning stone(you probably have heard of it being from NY), and never have been since they opened(its within walking distance from my sister in laws who we spend quite a bit of time with). I hate gambling, heck on my 21st birthday we took a bus trip to Atlantic city. Hated it! Casinos stink, are full of sweaty, disgusting people, and all you do is throw money at them like it's candy. Nope in no way to I like to gamble with anything. I like to know the outcome, and get very antsy if I am gambling with something.

But were not here to discuss the current coral "grab bag" trends in the hobby, or are we? It is hobby related. Anyways, yes tank is doing better, and no I beat the dinos, its just some Short GHA and turf. The red is actually red sponge, that is actually pretty cool. I have some pretty large white, and rapidly spreading yellow sponge, along with some red. It's pretty cool actually! I have never seen any sponge bedsides white.

What I really need is some more rock! I should have not given that pukani away! I only have the bottom 1/3 of the tank full of anything, I have no room for more corals, or high light corals. I have a 32" tall tank and only about 12" is being used for coral and/or rock. Maybe I'll look into some shelf rock and make some higher arches? Suggestions as I'm all ears, but I certainly need some more height. Maybe even just a large, high "pile" somewhere? I don't know I have to really think about it.

ooh forgot to add, the frags on my sandbed with plugs, are all frags I am giving to the person I'm mentoring. Some Zoa's, a large chunk of that monti, the 2 headed acan that I just cannot keep alive(might as well let someone else try it, all it's going to do is die in my tank), and 2 large fingers of the gorgonian I've had since I started this hobby.

I've seen Rakies tank(or rather maybe his frag tank?) he has a build thread on R 2 R and is very active over there. He's definitely got some beautiful SPS pieces.

Rakie has a frag and main tank, but they're both full of frags lol. Again, different strokes for different folks

If you want some rock, stop by my place after RAP (or just remind me to bring it) and you can have what you want of my acid-washed rock that's left. I have 2 large HD tubs of rock from setting up my tank that I didn't use because I went minimal. It's not live, but you already have live.

Nice to be giving frags and mentoring. All good stuff!

Another source of good, inexpensive, and choice frags would be buying packs from people on RC or that other site, or doing auctions for WWC, Cherry Corals, or ASD, or any of the other high end vendors. If you're sitting on a modest sum of money, you can get a bunch of really nice stuff for average $25-35/piece including shipping. That's where the number worked for me any time I've done those. Not cheap, and you have to buy a few to spread out cost of shipping, but you get to choose, there are really nice pieces that get overlooked, and you get value. The only auction I w as mixed about was WWC, because the frags were all tiny. Buying from other reefers usually gets best size for the price.

Blah I can't believe I'm up and everyone is up at 5-6am. But I'm on baby duty, second week in, so I'm up now every 2 hours.

I would definitely be up for the rock , if you don't mind.

And yes I'm always up at this time of day. lol welcome to the early birds time of day.

I would love to catch a few of those live auctions! Problem is, they always have them on the weekends, and I'm always working on weekends. I'll catch one, of these days.

As far as RAP goes, I'm bringing my friend and his wife. They wanted just a FOWLR tank, but are easily getting sucked into the reef side of things. I'm excited for RAP, and I'm 100% certain he's more excited them I am.

I need to ensure I mark down RAP on my calendar so I am around. HAHA. Else I might be zoom zooming around on my jet ski or jet setting somewhere for the weekend.

Sorry guys haven't been on here much lately, been hanging on R 2 R. Just so much more going on over there.

Small update.....

tank is chugging along, some new additions such as a gold squamosa clam, a harlequin shrimp(my wife just couldn't say no to such a cute little creature). Yes I'm fully aware it only eats starfish, but with the amount of asternia's in my tank, it should be well fed for a while.

On a side note, I did see one of the peppermint shrimp in my tank last night, and I believe it's the cause of my scoly dieing. Something ripped it's mouth out! Still has flesh , but it's mouth is a white crater.

Now if I could just get rid of this algae plague I would be a happy reefer. I know some algae is a good thing, but when I see pics of peoples tanks and their rocks aren't furry like mine, it makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong. Even the frag plugs I got just 3 weeks ago have algae all over them. The corals are doing fine on them, just the algae is starting to get taller then the frag. lol
