80Gal Rimless Tank Build

Hi Everyone,

I figured I would put up some pics from my most recent build. I know when I am looking for inspiration seeing other's threads always helps me.

The new system I am putting together is sort of a temp setup as I am likely to be moving again in a year so I went with a smaller tank this time.

The tank is a Deep Blue 80 Edge Rimless. I am pairing that tank with the IceCap RS-30 sump. The tank is decent and quite nice given the price. The sump is beautiful. I almost don't want to add doors to the stand I built.

Here are some shots of the stand I built. It is a standard 2x4 and plywood stand. I haven't yet built the doors for it but those are in the works.

I had to go back and swap out the trim pieces that I had put on the top of the stand for a piece of 3/4" plywood in order to get the surface flat and level.

Great job so far, I recently setup the same tank. Deep blue makes great tanks! Will you be keeping the bottom of the stand open?

Thanks. Yeah I'm not sure but I'm most likely going to build some shaker style doors for it.

This is minwax espresso. I'm a fan of it for sure. Used it for several projects now.

Since I'm moving all of my livestock from my old house to the new system I keep getting stuck on the order of things. I am trying to keep the old system running while I move to the new one. It's getting tricky though. Things like the Neptune system and lights need to be moved at some point so timing and the order is pretty crucial.

Thanks. I went to HD to get the conduit I needed to make the lighting stand. Then I realized I didn't have my conduit bender here. I decided to try something new so I picked up some black pipe and fittings and made light stands from that. I'll get some pics of the finished product later. I don't recall seeing anyone do this (I haven't done a search for it though)... Probably because of rust but it looks pretty nice and only took me an hour or so to put together.

I really like how these light hangers came out. They look nicer than the black painted conduit IMO.

Aren’t you concerned about the fireplace heat and the window light creating algae?

Not particularly no. The window light will be blocked at least partially by the floating light hood. In addition I run biopellets (it's an SPS system) and there are really never nutrients enough for significant algae growth.

As for the I don't plan to use that fireplace.... This house has 3.

I use black pipe for everything in my basement. I also use it to hold my t5 unit. You need to take it down and paint with hammerite spray paint so it will not rust. HD has it,use it to paint pipe all the time. Seals pipe so it cannot rust.Good Luck.

Haha yeah I had thought about that. I actually had a can in my cart.... You mean the hammered look spray paint?

Well I completed the move yesterday. That was a lot of work and I left behind a lot of coral as I couldn't fit some of the colonies into 5 gal buckets. That tank had been up nearly 7 years.

Still need to clean up the old system but if anyone is interested it will be for sale in a little while.

Custom rimless 120 starphire tank from Miracles. 1/2" glass (48 x 24 x 24). I'll be selling it by itself or as a package with the sump and stand.

There is a build thread for that tank on my profile as well.

Thanks,
Yeah I'm giving the floor time to do any settling it needs to then I'll remove the excess shims and add molding to the top and bottom of the stand.
