Swimming Pool Filter for Reef System?

I have a Hayward Cartridge Swimming Pool Filter that I use on my reef system to clear the water occationally. The cartridge filters available filter particles down to about 5 to 10 microns in size. I would assume that this would filter out most bacteria & algae in the water column. Any pros or cons for using this filter?

No metal parts?

I think a 5 or 10 micron filter will clog very fast, but I'd be interesting to see what you find.

The filter I use is the Hayward Micro Star Cartridge Filter. No metal parts. Around $60.00.

I have to take the filter out and hose it down well about once per month. Sometimes, I will take the cartridge filter out and soak in in a bleach solution over night. The filters last for a long time.

I had bypassed the filter for about 2 months and was running the carbon. My water started looking a little off, so I put the filter back in service and it cleared the water cystal clear in a couple of days. In this situation, I will have to clean the filter now. When I run this filter, the skim waste is reduced significantly.

You can run a 10 micron filter for 2 months? How much flow is through it?

2 months would be pushing it; more like 30 days before I need to clean it.

I am using a BlueLine 100 HD External Water Pump which has a Flow Rate of 1900gph @ 0'. I have a head of about 14' feet. Usually I run the filter in a partial by-bass position, so as not to put too much pressure on the pump.

The main concern I have is what are the effects on water chemistry regarding the trapped debris in the filter over the course of one month before I clean it.

Just curious Highlandreefer if your still using this and how its working for you? I use a Marineland Hot Magnum 250 and see a noticeable difference in water clarity when its on, so much that I have begun using it for the last couple months as an always on item in which I change the filter every 2-3 days as its only a 3 sq.ft. surface are where the cartridges in this are nearly 3 times (25 sq/ft) .. I just ordered it and guess I will have a report in a couple months but just figured Id ask and see if you were still using or had abandoned it ?

For what's it worth it am using a 5 micron sediment filter in a reactor on my system. Though it's used for catching precipitation from using lanthanum but it still is running saltwater from sump through this filter and back out to sump.
Due to lanthanum it clogs up easi l you and needs replacing every 10-12 days. Keeps water clean.

I ordered it i have a few large mag drive submersible pumps im hoping will provide enough head but ive been chasing this crystal clear water for months now and maybe this will do the trick? The lil hot mag does a decent job but just doesnt move enough water

You might need a very big pump to drive a sand filter. I'm not sure what the filter will do for clarity. You could consider a diatom filter.

Its not a sand filter, its a large Micron filter. basically a large H.O.T. Magnum

I just Picked up a EcoTech Vector L1 3100 G/P/H to power this thing. Think Thats enough ? Im going to Run it under my display tank so head will only be about 6' if that and figure it will provide greater flow for my display and polish the water immensely.

Okay, that makes more sense to me.
