48x30x19 Box of SPS

So I've had a lot of people over time ask me if I had a build thread for my tank, I had a small one on one of my local forums but never really shared the tank with too many people...

So I've decided to do a lot of copy and pasting from the local thread to put together what will be the past year of this tank running up to today...

Here is the tank as it currently sits today on 4-8-2016!

Some of you have seen my 30x30x18 cube, if not... well I have a SPS problem. The new tank was built by OBD in Seattle. It measures 48x30x19.

Here's a picture of the sump I built, it's quite the monster at 48x24 the large main chamber is a frag area that's 24x19, it'll be lit by an AI 26. (This has since been replaced with a custom made 4x24w T5-LED hybrid fixture)

So tomorrow I'll be getting the coral QT tank setup, dipping all my corals and keeping them in QT for the next week

So the tank is wet with the new rock structures built and added sand earlier today, I'm pretty happy with how it's come along although I'm amazed my wife still loves me after completely destroying our house to do this project.

On the down side I've lost a few corals in QT unfortunately... a couple pieces I really liked but nothing I can't hopefully replace at some point.

Anyways, here's how it sits at the moment... With everything doing so poorly in QT I think I'm going to go ahead and move everything into the new display tomorrow, time for LOTS of super glue on the fingers yay!

Tank is slowly coming back into shape, already started adding more SPS and things are on the up and up.

Project for tomorrow, RIP OUT THE LED'S!

Back to all tubes for this guy =)

In the initial pictures you can see I removed the two center tubes from the Powermodule and added two led pucks from an AI26 needless to say it wasn't worth sacrificing the two tubes for a few led's and I was quickly over it.

Guess it's time for a little update, colors are slowly coming back... Went lights out for a few days and things lightened up pretty while I added new sand and pulled the leds out of my powermodule. Back to 8 T5's and things already look better!

New bulb combo is

Blue+
Coral+
Actinic
Coral+
Purple+
Actinic
Coral+
Blue +

This week I'm going to try moving a few bulbs around and see how things look but overall I'm pretty happy with the current tank color.

Guess I should post a little update... Things are starting to color up slowly and growing at a decent rate.

My buddy Kevin snapped this off the other day when he was over.

Someoene had asked me for some equipment pictures...

Sump is about as basic as it gets, filter socks are changed once per week, and all other nutrient export is done via the skimmer. No GFO, I will run carbon a couple days every month or so but not all the time. I snapped off a few crummy iPhone pictures so you can get the gist of the setup.

Moved a few pieces around so I guess it's time for an updated FTS...

I don't really update this thread very often, but you can always catch me on my FB. I probably should update this more since that FTS already feels out of date considering some of the rapid coral growth, the formosa stags will need to be chopped pretty soon before they start growing flat against the water surface, the front colony is less an inch from the water line now and the tips are branching again.

So for bulbs I recently switched out all of my Blue+ bulbs for FM Ultra Royal Blues, so far I'm really happy with the bulbs and I think they have just a touch of something special that the Blue+ doesn't, some pieces just seem to pop a little more. Long term effects will be interesting as well as bulb life. I know quite a few Europeans that swear by them. I need to talk to FM about getting setup as a distributor here in the US because ordering directly from Germany is kind of a pain.

A few months back I also added the LED strip to the front of the powermodule, Thanks Rudy & Matt =) It's nothing crazy, just 15 LED's to help with a little more pop. It also helps light up the front of the tank a little more which I like because it always felt a little dim to me. I was going to upgrade to a used 10 bulb PM but since this tank will be coming down in the near future with the build of our new house I've decided to just leave things as they are till I make a final decision on the dimensions of the new tank.

Bulbs are:

FM Royal Blue
Purple+
ATI Actinic
AquaBlue Special
FM Royal Blue
ATI Actinic
Purple+
FM Royal Blue

Actinic's come on at 9:00am
Led's come on at 9:30am
Mains turn on at 10:00am

Mains off at 9:30pm
LED's off at 9:45pm
Actinic's off at 10:00

The last few pictures are with my new larger port hole I built, and yes I have had more than one person ask me of I built it from an old skimmer cup and NO that was not my intention lol.

It works quite well, the 15+ year old Nikon D70 still keeps ticking, the real quality is in the 55mm Micro Nikkor Nikon lens. It's great piece of glass.

Your tank is STUNNING! Your pictures are amazing. It's like you challenged yourself to cram as much beauty into that tank as possible and you succeeded! Are you still currently running T5 only, same configuration you listed?

Guess it's time for another update...

So this is the most recent photos I've taken of the tank... Not much has changed, a few pieces have come and gone, trimmed a lot moved a few things around stuff is still growing. More or less just letting the tank do it's thing.

I recently changed back to my old ATB cone skimmer since I was feeling like the current one just wasn't keeping up with the waste from the larger fish as we as I would of liked.
