Just an update. I have my tiny black frogfish eating off the rigid + flex + fishing line feeding implement regularly now.
At first he wouldn't go for thawed. Then I got him to swallow pieces of selcon-added silverside, but he would only spit them out right after. He finally accepted a fraction of a piece of krill on two different occasions. Tonight I got him to eat very small piece of silverside off of the stick. Relative to him both the tiny krill pieces and the tiny strips of silverside are substantial. All so far have been beaded and squished/sopped with a drop/dot of selcon. I still have a 20gal long with saltwater white feeder shrimp from Liveaquaria, and a 5gal bucket of rodi water with a breeding population of fw guppies. I was thinking of rotating the food types, for example 2 different thawed types to 1 live feeding. I was thinking that feedings via implement-only of all types would be best so he doesn't break his 'training'. There is the opinion that some (or all) live feedings do well for your frogfishes health. I want to let the sw shrimp get alittle bigger before feeding those again. They are quite small at this stage. I also might try to breed them if possible, so I don't want to tear their population down too much yet. However I have mixed feelings about the guppies. I don't want the frogfish to get some illness from them or something. FW fish seem prone to 'fuzz', though I haven't seen a sign of it in the guppies yet. Mollies seem more prone? |

Hairy Bananas... cool name
Hiya to all you CA/Bay Area froggie peeps Picked up a 2" fuzzy black striatus recently. He's in a breeder basket in my 72 right now. No pics yet. The dorehensis pair spawned for the 3rd time this past Thursday evening. Here's a vid I took this morning of the egg raft. You can see larvae wiggling around inside the eggs http://media.putfile.com/egg-raft-with-larvae I put this batch of eggs in a separate container. I dropped the s.g. just a bit last night after reading about that in a clownfish breeding article. I wasn't able to save any babies from the first two batches of eggs. I have a big bucket of Reef Nutrition live rotifer culture for feeding these guys when they hatch... which looks to be soon... maybe this evening I'm guessing I'll be feeding rotifers for a week or so, and then will have to start in with pods. |

Mr. Ugly be sure to right me down for a baby! Did you get the striatus from atlantis? I bet your the punk that had that bad boy on hold. lol Kyle

Hehehe... no, that wasn't me. I got mine from a different LFS. Smaller than the Atlantis one, but for such an awesome price that I had to jump on it

Vid taken late last night, about 15 hours after the previous vid.
The egg raft has flattened and spread out from half dollar size to ~3" across. Some of the larvae have broken free. Fed a bunch of rotifers to the container before going to bed. http://media.putfile.com/larvae I see lots of free swimming babies this morning |

Reefcherie, thanks! I love the "hairy" look too!!
Lefty, those are some scary frogs especially the sargassum. What kind is the second one? Mr. Ugly, I'm pleading the fifth on the name. Those babies are sweet. I had planktonic octopus babies about a month ago, hope you have better luck than I did! Do they need a kriesel? Kyle, yours definately wins the Bush Award! He is so cool!!! How big is he? How much did you pay? If you haven't already, check out Hairy Bananas

Roctopus, I was recommended to use a kriesel. I didn't have one, and I made due with a large plastic jar that I put into a frag growout bin.
The first time, I left the eggs in the minibow. The second time, I tried using a breeder basket. The jar has worked out way better for feeding the babies. Here's vid from last night. Free swimming froggie larvae. 7th day since spawning. Double click on the media player to see the clip full screen. Vid is ~2 minutes long, and might be boring if you're not into frogs or fish larvae http://media.putfile.com/free-swimming-larvae |

It's never too early to start hinting for Christmas + your next birthday + Father's Day (froggies qualify you!) + .......
Might take you up on that one of these days! What's more fun than watching your own frogfish? Answer: go see other people's anglers!
