Algae reaction
3gal pico is cycling with 4 lbs of live rock and 4 Scarlett hermits. Water parameters are good and we just did our first water change. Made sure salinity and temperature were consistent with the tank before topping off, and about 15 mins after the change our algae turned bright orange. Is this normal?

If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was an effect from 20k (or otherwise sufficiently blue) lighting causing the appearance (fluorescing). Otherwise, I'd wonder if the alkalinity in your salt mix might be a fair amount higher than it was before the water change. Some salt mixes have high alk, even by the batch.

For some reason mine looks like that under strong blue lights (AB+). Turn on full daylights or shine a flashlight on the rock. Does it still look orange?

Happens. It's unfortunately brief, and goes ultimately to brown.

Stays orange under whites. Is the turn to brown die off or is this still healthy growth?
I know the iPhone camera tends to “blue” photos but this is full white/daylight. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
