man, I thought my 125 4x2x2 three sided view was nice. Like the 4x4.
I don't know if it has been covered. I read the first like 3-5 pages and kinda skipped around from there. What was the cost difference between 3/4 and 1" acrylic? I also understand that if you have to ask, you can't afford it, but what was rough price on just the tank alone? I see 300$ on the stand. Nice job on all those 45*'S on the trim btw. Just did some door moulding, and they matched up 96% perfect. But you have a million 45* there.

Thanks for the compliments on the stand. Yes, there were alot of 45's but it was well worth the extra effort.

The cost of the tank, with all the custom drilling, all bulkheads, durso standpipe, and the two closed loop drains included, was less than $940.
Hehehe, you make that sound cheap however for the size i GUESS it is, lol!

I'm guessing that glass cages price is for a regular tank...i.e. no overflows, holes drilled, bulkheads, delivery, etc. I'd bet they are over the price SOG got the acrylic tank for. I could be wrong too.

I used premium grade pine and birch for all the finish trim work. I used regular a grade 2x4s for the frame.
Red Mahogany stain, sealed, with 3 coats of satin laquer.

Hey, thanks to you i got my stand framed in today! i used some 2x6s like you said.... i will start a new thread.
quick question on those 1x6s and 1x3s did you make then go the length of the stand? or cut them short of where the colmuns started? also on those 1x6s did it just barely cover the 2x4s? with my stand i need to cover 7" on the top and then 6" on the side.... how did you use 1x3s to cover 6" of 2x4s? i mean i should cover up the 2x4s right? i dont even know if they make 1x8s? and if i use 1x8s..... then my opening top to bottom will only be about 23"ish? any ideas on what i should do to finish my stand? what i did was used the exact same plan as yours, but instead of using that 2x4 to span the distance i used 2 2x6s like you suggested... anyway let me know what you did with those 1x3 and 1x6s if you went all the way from 1 end to the other or if you stopped at the columns and what i should use to cover the 2x4s and 2x6s... thanks again! Glad to hear my design is working for you.
The horizontal trim boards went between the columns, not the full length of the stand. When I built my columns, I left a 2x4 exposed on each side that I could nail my vertical 1x3 pine trim to. If you go back to my original thread of building my stand, you can see a good pic of the trim and columns being started. The 1x6 pine trim covered my 2x4 horizontal supports well. But, you will have to go with 1x8's, (which are actually only 3/4" x 7 1/2" in true size), to cover your 2x6's. Yes, your opening will be slightly smaller than mine, if you built it to the same height, because you went with 2x6's as horizontal supports.

Ok i think thats makes sense.
i actrually built my about 3" taller that yours to accomodate the extra height of the 2x6s.... it worked really well and i would like to say thanks again! Next weekend i will get it all finished.... well hopefully... i think i getw hat you are saying, so you nailed the 1x3s to the last 2x4 right? then you stopped the 1x6s (in my case 1x8s) right at the 1x3s and then built the columns right up to the 1x3s correct? or did you leave room inbetween the 1x3s and the column? do you happen to have a pic of one of the corners of the columns and how you joined it to the stand? i mean i would like to see the crown molding and how it meets at the column and the stand.... i am trying to figure it out in my head how to do it, but am drawing a blank... so if you could snap a quick picture of that it would be great! also how you attached your doors if you do not mind.... one more thing for you.... should i go with pine also? i am staining my i think an oak color..... woudl pine work? thanks again! thanks! Nick |

You should seal the inside and out side of the stand when you have the wood work completed and a coat of stain on it. Stain, seal, putty the holes, sand it lightly, then laquer it.

Nick, I can't take any pics of the corner columns that would help you out. The stand is finished and all the woodwork is now hidden. Go back through my 'stand build' thread and do your best to look at the columns design and fabrication. Its too complicated to explain it all.
The columns were built first, then the 1x3s and 1x6s were cut to fit in between the columns. Yes, it is very important to putty all the holes after you seal it. You'll need to lightly sand the exposed trim after you seal it because sealer raises the wood grain and makes the surface feel rough. Yes, seal first then putty. Doors are attached with hidden hinges. You can buy them at Lowes or Home Depot. You can use any wood and any stain that you like. But know that all woods stain up differently. Look at the samples at your local hardware store to see how each particular wood type colors up for each stain and simply pick the one that you like best. If you're using pine, definately use the premium or 'A' grade pine. The cheaper pine doesn't look as good, isn't cut to as exacting specifications and will more likely warp over time. Good luck. Lastly, from now on, please send me a PM with your stand build questions. This thread has kind of been hijacked by all your stand questions. I'm more than happy to try and answer them, but I don't think all the others are that interested in them. Also, remember, I'm not an expert, I just built a nice stand using what skills I have. If you need more technical info you your end, contact a local trim carpenter or visit a wood working store near you. Thanks Thanks
