Gig treatment - day 10

Hi all,

Here is my gig on day 10 of treatment. I bought from my LFS, it was in DT for two weeks and then didn't look great, so I decided to treat with Cipro.

Do you thinks it's ready to go back into my DT?

Thanks,

MM

Based on the video alone, in my opinion, i would say no. Typically you are looking for a tightly closed mouth, good strong posture (which you appear to have) and staying fully inflated through out the daytime lighting cycle.

I would add that you are close but i would not risk having to remove him again (more stress )from your DT to retreat.

It's up and down - looks fine one day, the next the mouth is agape. I'll keep treating for another few days. If there's no significant change after 2 weeks of treatment, any idea's?
I've had the gig a month now and I haven't fed it. I know you shouldn't feed while in treatment but we're in treatment two weeks this coming Monday. Would a feed bounce it back?

If it accepts food I think it's a pretty good sign that it does not have an infection. I've never had a sick one that would eat.

After 14 days of treatment, the gig anemone has perished. I did everything according to the various protocol's. Just unlucky I guess. It's definitely been a learning curve for me. 350 Euro ($400) down the drain.

That sucks. I definitely know the feeling. These things are tough. Honestly, I'm starting to question the effectiveness of cipro on gigs. I've treated quite a few now and followed the protocol exactly. I know some people seem to have success with it but I'm curious how many are actually saved by the cipro vs how many would have recovered with just daily 100% water changes. I've only had 2 survive and I honestly don't think those 2 even needed to be treated in the first place.

Healthy

To Treat with Cipro or Doxy you need to make the anemone is still not floppy or internally injured.

Either up the dosage or wait and if you see menstral fillments its injured.

I would not treat an anemone that big in a small tank.

I just treat a mertens with cipro for a week and it went from crap to great.

I did 250 ml to a gallon of water.

Am I reading that correctly? 250ml for 1 gallon of water? So for a 10 gallon tank you'd dose 2500ml? 10x the recommended dosage?

I'm not doubting you, I just want to make sure that's it is right. I too have lost nems in treatment at 500ml for 10 gallons. I've wanted to up the dosage but didn't want to waste Cipro on a lost cause. It's good to know that I can go 10x the dosage and not have to worry about killing the nem.

Sorry that corrected it

It was MG per gallon.

250 milligrams per gallon.

I did a 2.5 gallon tank with 500 milligrams of cipro.

The mertens was around 4-5 inches across.

I believe the large the anemone the large the qt tank.

I would go with a 10 to 20 gallon tank for larger ones.

Oops.. I meant milligrams as well, but my question remains the same. Sounds like you did use 10x the recommended dosage though (Cipro 250 mg or Septra 160/800 mg per every 10 gal of water).

The bottle of Cipro i have recommended 250 milligrams per gallon to treat possible infections.

I started with 1 pill per 2.5 gallons and upped it depending on how the anemone looked.

I also did a water change every 24 hours basically.

It is possible that dosing for fish and anemone is different?. I don't think the medication get into the fish, unless it is ingested. For anemone, the med just permeated though out the anemone.
Dose of 250 mg per 2.5 gal is way too high for anemone, IMO. 250 mg per 10 gal or the absolute mas of 500 mg per 10 gal some people use.

Did your anemone did well? any problem with bleaching or another problem. It would be great if we have some data on the high dose. I know that I am not 100% successful with the dose I recommended.

It did very well

It did very well, i beleive that fish would also take in the anti biotics just like an anemone. The water passes through their gills.

It was bleaching already as you can see in the first pic, its has begun to regain color since i moved it back into the display
