Aquamaxx HOB won't fit on my rim

First off, I love the skimmer. I had it running for an hour or so and it's awesome! It showed up quickly and arrived in perfect shape.

My problem: The lip of my tank is too big for the mount. I was thinking of making a shim, or cutting my tanks lip. I was just wondering if you guys know of a better solution for this.

Posted this in the main forum as well. Looks like I may just shave a bit of the lip down. Still, if this is something you have seen before, and I'm guessing you must have, and you know of a good fix, please let me know.

Shaved it last night. I ended up taking most of the lip off to make it fit. Bummer. Also, I would not recommend this. A lot of debris were flying everywhere, even with a catch tray, and I had to get very close to the glass. Made me nervous.

Having a shim made may have worked better, although the skimmer would have operated about 2" higher than it should if it sat directly on the lip. Maybe this is something they should include in the box. I was actually very surprised that I had not read about this issue. It must be common.

Anyways. Skimmer on and running. I still think it was worth it. I'm very happy with the equipment and exited to break it in.

Again, if you hear from them or have any additions to this thread, I would appreciate it. Maybe I was just doing something wrong.

Thank you for your inquiry and the information. The skimmer does accommodate aquarium rims up to 3/4" so in many installations it can be installed without a hitch.

For your application, trimming just the lip is usually sufficient. We're glad to hear that you were able to get it to work. In my personal experience, a Dremmel or even a sharp utility knife will usually do the trick. The shavings to tend to go everywhere; however, it floats so it is fairly easy to net out.

We will give your feedback regarding the shim to AquaMaxx as well.

Now that I think about it, that's what happened. I read about the 3/4" rim part, measured my rim, but didn't take into account the lip. And yes, I got any floating loose bits out of the water with a fine net. I hope this thread helps someone down the road.
