Just finished reading all 51 pages of your build thread. It is an absolute joy, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

I noticed that you don't have a chiller and just use a fan. I was always under impression that with MH you can't get away with that but your example proves otherwise. Can you comment on that?

I don't mean to interject, but depending on many factors MHs can be used successfully without a chiller, or in some cases without fans. Many of the newer/better reflectors allow users to hang MHs higher than in the past, sometimes 16" or more off the water. This keeps the heat from raising the temperature of the water too much.

Also keep in mind how your canopy is setup. I have my 400w MHs hanging in an open air space, and because of that I don't even use a fan. I only see peak temperatures in the heat of summer, and even then it is 82-83.

Thank you for the kind words. I use several fans. One on the sump also helps greatly. Tank dimensions and sump size have much to do with the success without a chiller IMHO. A large as possible water surface to air area is important. Keeping the lamps up high enough to not expose the aquarium to intense radiant heat helps. A controller on the heaters is also key. They will not cycle on when not called for, unlike the built in thermostats. Dugless also makes a good point .

Good point. Interject as much as you desire. This is what these forums are all about. TY
