Randy's recipe #1 - 1st approaching
Hi there,
My name's Eduardo from Brazil. I'm trying to use the Randy's recipe number #1 but getting some trouble during the mixing. The stuff is resting from 2 now two hours, shaken it some times during this but doesn't getting clear at all! See(1500ml (each) container): https://ibb.co/m8gZny What I used (Grams and milliliters) https://ibb.co/m8gZny https://ibb.co/deCJEd All the calculation to have 1200ml final volume: ->158,30 grams - Calcium CaCl2.2H2O - Purest PA solution ->216,57 grams - MgSO4.7H2O + 359,7 grams - MgCl2.6H2O - Purest PA solution ->188,07 grams - NaHCO3 - ROYAL SODIUM BICARBONATE BUFFER - Royal Nature (pure NaHCO3 according to manufacturer) Why magnesium part and alkalinity part are not dissolving properly? ps: forgot to bake (1H @150șC) the NaHCO3 before mixing. Please, help me !! Thanks in advance. E. Oliveira Last edited by bertoni; 06/13/2018 at 10:41 PM. Reason: fixed some links |

To Reef Central If you heat the alkalinity solution, it'll dissolve eventually. I suspect that's the issue. The magnesium solution usually is a bit "slushy". That's normal. It must be shaken before measuring out a dose.

That'll work, too. Both processes convert the sodium bicarbonate into sodium carbonate.

I just mixed up a batch of AL and it took a good 20-30 minutes of constant stirring at water temp of 115 f. Mag isn't much better but I eventually get it all dissolved.

Raising the temperature should help. Boiling the solution should be safe enough for baking soda or magnesium solutions.

Use a deep pot. Splashing on to the stove top makes for dried alk to clean up.
