90 cube with DIY stand

Starting to look at a new system to replace my old 75 that was already used when I got it 5 years ago. I've decided that a rimless 90 cube would best fit the space where the tank is.

I've never made my own stand before, so looking for some input. I've based it on the monster stand thread over here.

The basic frame looks like this, all made of 2x4s. Overall the frame will be 4' x 30"

The top and sump floor will be 3/4" ply, topped with foam mat. A small section on the right of the stand will be walled off for electrical.

The sides will be completely removable for easy access. The little tank on the right is a small frag grow-out tank that will be plumbed to to rest of the system.

Once it's all done, I'm hoping the finish will make it look like an old barnwood crate.

Looks good! The only thing I’d do differently is to put the bottom piece of plywood underneath the stand rather than having sit on top of the bottom frame. Not only will you gain 3 1/2” inside the stand, you’ll also have a watertight compartment to set the sump in.

Spills happen. All you can do is minimize the danger.

HTH!

Thanks for the tip billdogg. I found your thread about the overflowing skimmer. Good advice!

With all the weight on one end, should I be concerned about lateral movement, or should this be pretty solid?

Will at least some of the skin be permanently attached? IMHO that stand design is already so totally overbuilt that it will be rock solid anyway, but skinning it with even 1/4" ply will make it that much less prone to racking.

The weight will be fine as long as you make sure all 4 corners of the tank have solid support. As for as tipping, you'll be over #1000 so doubt that will be an issue either.

FWIW - I was just reading another post and they mentioned sealing the inside of the stand with flexseal. I used paint and caulk, but I sure wish I would have gone that route!

It is overbuilt, but lends itself well for someone who doesn't have a whole lot of tools around. I've been considering the back, and sides like this.

Stand looks nice. I'm sure the tank is solid and won't be rocking anywhere.
