The main reason for the price difference is likely the insurance: Glass tanks are statistically more likely to have catastrophic failures.
Though if I would go with a large "in-wall" tank I would do it the way it is done in public aquaria: a fiberglass (or even concrete) "tub" with an acrylic front. I mean, why spend a load of money for thick acrylic on all the sides you will never look through and which you likely want to have opaque anyway?
