DanW’s 187 SPS Dominated Reef Journal

Hello,

My name is Dan and I am a reefaholic. I thought that I would share my addiction with perhaps the only folks that would really understand. The tank was initially set-up in November 2008. It replaced a 110 gallon that was up for 2 years, which replaced a 46 gallon that was up for 4 years. My plan is use this thread as a sort of reef journal from set-up to ??? Thanks for reading, please feel free to comment as I am always open to suggestions and new ideas.

Equipment:
187 gal. Lee-Mar 3 sided Starfire (60”l x 30”w x 24”h), euro-braced, tempered glass bottom
36” Lee-Mar Atlantis series maple stand
Vortech 2 x MP40
Tunze 2 x 6045
48” Giesemann Spectra Pendant: 2 x 250SE, 4x48” T5
Bubble King 200 Mini
Korallin 1502 calcium reactor
Geo kalkwasser reactor
2 x TLF reactors (GFO & carbon)
Mag 12 return
AC Jr.
Advanced Acrylics 3 chambered sump: 36”l x 24”w x 20”h
Tunze Osmolator

But first some pictures of the old 110 (60”l x 18”w x 24”h) taken October 2008 just before being taken down

My first two frags went into the tank on October 26. Luckily there was no water, they were eventually removed.

Yup used to be a familiar site in front of So Cal Tropical Fish. I wonder how the economy has effected the frequency.

November 8, 2008 – The tank is filled and running, still very cloudy.

Sump pictures with a temporary skimmer.

Funny thing now when I go to a fish store I look for you before I look for the livestock. BTW I gotta say your girlfriend is a trooper, she's always with you on your LFS adventures.

Yes, two tanks running in the living room. Can you hear my wife? “You want to do what?” “You never told me that you wanted to have two tanks!” “How long will till you take one away, you know the holidays are coming.” Can you hear me? "But, but, but…”

What kind of lights are you going to be using? I don't think your 48" Giesemann fixture is going to cut it.

Yeah but the walk across the dining room on the way to the garage with the skimmer cup is treacherous.

Yeah Mark (right) the fixture does leave a darker area that is about 6” on each side. (Also realize that there is about 3” - 4” of sand between the end of the rocks and the glass.) I have placed lower light corals in those areas and so far it has worked out good. For example I have a Red Planet at the very edge and it still exhibits very little green, actually almost none.

Dan, I am still hanging on to my main tank. Your room look good with 2 tanks. Tell your wife" Do you think tanks look good than just wall?" We can have family reunion and explore Aquarium of the Pacific In the House. Guests will admire us."
I like to come by to check out your tank sometime Dan.

Bro John. When are you going to setup your bro ? follow the bunch bro.
