How come aquamaxx didn't add overflow protection like their other model?

Hi Steevareno2002,

For all of the larger skimmers (CO-1, CO-2, CO-3, EM200, EM300, etc...), all the collection cup drains are on the bottom of the collection cup. Only the smaller skimmers HOB-1, HOB-XC have the collection cup drains towards the top of the collection cup and doubles as a emergency drain. Since the larger collection cups lock in place (instead of just sitting in the skimmer) and have heavier lids, we would assume that the emergency drain is not needed.

I love this skimmer but think all hob skimmers should come with overflow protection. Just for peace of mind.

Let it run for a few days without adjusting.

The skimmer will be erratic during the first 2-4 week break-in period. We usually recommend having the outlet fully open (arrow pointing towards "O") and let the skimmate drain back into the skimmer during break-in.

If the skimmer is still overflowing after a couple of weeks, we would recommend doing a large water change (about 25%) and run activated carbon to help make the water less viscous (which reduces the foaming).

Let us know how it works out.

A couple more suggestions.

An issue commonly encountered is a change in the viscosity of the water. Many of the water conditioners, bacterial supplements, medications, coral foods and greasy fish food will increase the viscosity of the water significantly. If the 'greasiness" is not removed through water changes and running activated carbon, the viscosity of the water would increase and there would be more foaming and microbubbles.

It would also be a good idea to check the pump, impeller and air intake parts to make sure everything is clean. If the airflow is restricted, the pump would draw in more water which causes water and air bubbles to travel through the skimmer quicker than it normally would. This causes more microbubbles to exit the skimmer as it has less time to dissipate.

Each one is rated for between 90 and 175 gallons depending on the bioload so having two on a 180 should be great even with a higher bioload.

Thank you for your question! Although it is not currently on sale, you will receive $19 cash back you can use toward a future purchase (paid to you via reward points) if you were to buy the ConeS HOB today.

Can you extend that $19 rewards points offer until tomorrow? Will I be able to use it with this order?
I"m at work and cant access my paypal. They have us locked down tight. Also does Aquamaxx offer a upgrade kit for a older HOB-1 I have older one on another tank.

The $19 cash back would be earned on this order so that you could apply it to a future order. Our rewards program isn't going anywhere, so you can order when it's most convenient for you.

We do offer some HOB-1 replacement parts, but if you're looking for something like a new bubble plate, you may want to contact AquaMaxx directly. It's early so I would imagine you'll hear back today.
