There is a carbon bushing at the bottom of the motor cavity which the shaft will seize to. You're likely going to need to wiggle the impeller a bit if you can to free it. The bushing will likely come out with the shaft. You will then need to work the bushing off.

Another thing you can try is heating the vinegar up and then placing the pump into the vinegar for several minutes. The heat will accelerate & improve the vinegars effectiveness and help free the shaft.

Note: soaking a pump in 100% vinegar for more than a few minutes is a bad idea.. The vinegar eats at the electrical seal and will cause it to fail exposing your tank to dangerous electricity..

reminder: all line powered equipment should be protected by a GFCI device of one kind or another..

Agreed.. White vinegar is usually 5% and a soak of no more than 10 minutes is typically safe though it's best to remove the o-rings. Anything longer than 10 minutes can eat at and soften the epoxy potting on and in the pumps. It will also damage the rubber.

Not necessarily but it's possible you did damage them. The wires that go into the motor body are typically sealed with epoxy potting and the prolonged exposure to vinegar will break down epoxy and can compromise the seal and expose the inside of the motor to water which can result in stray voltage. Most don't realize that vinegar is used in the boat hull manufacturing industry as well as other industry to clean up cured and uncured epoxy. Were you able to get the impeller out?

Thats not really "stray voltage".. Thats real due to product/seal failure..

LOL... You have a point there.. I contemplated how to word it since a voltage leak that was induced from a known source isn't technically stray but the stray voltage is the typical term when voltage is found in the tank so I rolled with it.

Now what size do i need to replace?

I threw away all my pumps. Which means i have to replace them all now. My skimmer pump was a needle wheel eco-633 which is 592gph according to the web. Sedra needwheel pumps are either 500 or 700 gph any suggestions this is on a old reef dynamics skimmer that always worked great.
