I have the same tank. How high do you run the water level? Right now I have mine just below the upper baffles. That level still leaves the return lines slightly above the water line. I think it causes microbubbles with those exposed to air. They'll seal up after a week or two but if I adjust them they start right back up.

Here's my equipment list.

IM Fusion 40
Tunze 9004 Skimmer
MP10ESw
Hydra 52
BRS carbon reactor sitting next to tank fed from MJ1200
3 BRS Dosers for Calc, Alk, and top off.
RKE controlling everything

Here's my build thread I need to update.

thats one of the things I dislike about the tank. From what I have read, the water line is just below the rear chamber baffle walls. This does expose the tops of the return nozzles..and yes, micro bubble hell. I turn them to reseal them at least once a week or I see bursts of MBs...I considered raising the baffles in the sump to bring the level up an inch..haven't had time to actually do it yet..

great looking tanks!

I think I have my water line too high then. It's just enough to cover the top of the return pipes. No micro bubbles at least tho.

Anyone use one of the chambers in the back as a refuge? I put some macro algae in the 2nd right chamber. Hope it helps a little for pods to grow.

I just upgraded to this tank recently and need to buy a protein skimmer. Just read some of you have the tunze 9004 and some how the ghost. Can you tell me why you like the one you bought? I am between both so trying to decide.

I don't have any experience with the ghost. When I was shopping it had some bad reviews and everyone seemed to be happy with the Tunze. I can say that the Tunze does a great job. The construction is bullet proof and adjustment is as easy as moving it up or down in the tank.

This is my first tank over 12 gallons so it has been an adjustment for me. This tank is @ 3 1/2 months old. I am having a big problem with algae and have been doing water changes but I am hoping the skimmer will help. I do not have an ATO so will I have any issues with either one of these skimmers if the water gets a little low?

Yes, water level will affect it but as long as you have the skimmer in one of the outer chambers the level will stay the same. Only the center chamber water level changes in the the Fusion 40.

I like the design if the ghost. It fits almost too perfect. It broke in pretty quick. It's collecting skimmate. Air valve gets wonky occasionally..but easy to clear.

I used the Tunze 9004 on my old BC29 and didn't want to spend money on another skimmer. 9004 works great, but you must place it in one of the outer chambers. Nice thing about that is that the water level there never changes. I've had good results and no micro bubbles.

Full Apex w/ Break out box w/ float switches
MP10wES
Kessil a360WE (with lerussodesigns.com attachment's)

Still debating on a skimmer. Leaning towards the ghost because it's a cleaner look.

I ended up buying a Buddeez plastic dog food dispenser from Ross. It holds 4gal of water and is clear. It's tall and slim so it fits in the stand perfectly as well. Cost $9.99. Can't wait to set up the ato tonight.
