I wouldn't remotely. Bioballs can be somewhat useful in a fish only, but they're detrimental to a reef.

This isn't saying a fish only can't benefit from a fuge---but using both just doesn't make sense. A fuge is to destroy nitrate (in its sandbed) and the job of a bioball filter is to create it. So it's kind of creating a problem to solve.

Salinity 1.024-6; alkalinity 8.3-9.3 on KH scale; calcium 420; magnesium 1300, temp 78-80, nitrate .2. Ammonia 0. No filters: lps tank. Alk and cal won't rise if mg is low.

Current Tank Info: 105g AquaVim wedge, yellow tang, sailfin blenny, royal gramma, ocellaris clown pair, yellow watchman, 100 microceriths, 25 tiny hermits, a 4" conch, 1" nassarius, recovering from 2 year hiatus with daily water change of 10%.

it's the new to the hobby forum... Who cares if it's a question that is always talked about..if it bothers you, just move on to the next post. Dont read it if it's that frustrating to you.

OP, Sk8r summed it up nicely..

Bioballs are not bad, it's just the way in which they're used that causes all the problems. If you submerge them than there no different than a piece of live rock. Just a place for bacteria to colonize. When you use them in a wet/dry filter, (under a drip plate) that's when the stigma is attached and they tend to become more trouble than there worth. Even live rock used in this fashion will become problematic.

Soaking them is a waste of space, add a spoon of sand and you got thousand times the areal.
Now forget this crap about nitrate you hear about.
Where else do you create the surface for bacteria to colonize where it doesn't use up the oxygen in the water?
Now, bacteria, yes.
Bacteria with unlimited supply of oxygen ought to be incredible useful for breaking down toxins. With a water flow witch would smother any GAC.
Tank cooling, passive to air or active with a fan, now this is a cheap and well tried out cooler. Used to create fake snow in the winter around here.

Make it airtight and call it a ozone reactor.

Seems easy, but then again, much more than breaking down ammonia. You have problem with nitrate, it is NOT a wet drys fault.
Americans love this "guns don't kill", I agree, but one CAN STILL blame the gun for existing, but ppl are at fault either way.

Forums would be pretty boring if there never was any repeated information. Then it would basically be wikipedia.

But as mentioned, don't bother with the bioball and just setup the fuge.
